This is turning into a rather sad and understandably rather shocking situation. The American government has said it will not extradite the lady, I believe it is about setting precedent. The decision that the lady is covered by diplomatic immunity laws/rules is contentious. It could be argued that anybody in any country that is foreign to them has diplomatic immunity if they are going about business assigned by their government. On the other hand it can be argued that diplomatic immunity has tight boundaries and only apply to working registered diplomats, not intelligence officers, and not their wives. All the time a twin has lost a brother and a family a son. The way it seems to be panning out from an American perspective is that Harry Dunn was actually an unfortunate victim of some kind of blue on blue friendly fire incident. The reality seems to me much more about careless/dangerous driving, not state secrets or international relations. I am now wondering what thought processes Anne Sacoolas must be going through to tell herself that it was ok to skip the country and avoid facing responsibility. Does she say to herself 'I was engaged with highly sensitive secretive work on behalf of my government so whatever i do is allowed'? Indeed if the lady has the benefit of diplomatic immunity then why did she flee the country at all? She could have stayed and carried on secure in her 'diplomatic' position. The poor lad lost his life and Anne Sacoolas seems to be twisting the knife.
Countries don't have to grant diplomatic immunity, they can quite simply throw the entire delegation out and cut off relations entirely. I think they should. It's high time someone cuts the USA down a notch or two.
