The UK Navy has carried out the first fire tests of its new generation air missile defence system that should be able to intercept and to destroy supersonic missiles. The UK Ministry of Defence said that Sea Ceptor missiles were successfully fired from HMS Argyll off the coast of Scotland. The new system is set to replace the Sea Wolf weapon system on Type 23 frigates. It uses missiles capable of reaching up to three times the speed of sound. The system is able to deal with multiple targets at the same time and to protect about 1,300 square kilometres over land or sea. HMS Argyll will conduct further firing tests of the Sea Ceptor’s system. The warship will be deployed to Japan in 2018.....snip~ https://southfront.org/uk-navy-carr...nse-system-against-supersonic-missiles-video/ Imagine that. The Brits are able to shoot down supersonic missiles. They might want to think about deploying that over to Japan much sooner than 2018. What say ye?
Ministry of Defence ✔ @DefenceHQ Watch the first firings of Sea Ceptor at sea by the @RoyalNavy's HMS Argyll, announced by Def Min today. Read more: http://ow.ly/fp4J30eTvXM Nope.....just test firing.
I was reading about the Royal Navy's Sea Wolf a few weeks ago. It intercepted a 4.5" artillery gun shell in mid air and during the first Gulf war (Desert Storm) the Iraqis thought they could sink an Iowa class battleship with a Scud missile. Well a British frigate fired a Sea Wolf missile at the incoming Scud and blew it out of the sky. So the Sea Ceptor's will be replacing the Sea Wolf's. It must have an edge over the Sea Wolf's.
That's what they are saying their system should do and the ship is deploying to Japan by 2018, huh? The UK Navy has carried out the first fire tests of its new generation air missile defence system that should be able to intercept and to destroy supersonic missiles......snip~
Yeah, and they are saying they will be able to deal with multiple targets too. They should put on a demo with some slower moving ballistic missiles taking out 2 or 3 at a time.
Doesn't look like it can stop the Zircon. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...ssia-zircon-missiles-hypersonic-a7651781.html
No Russia or Soviet missile ever deployed has worked remotely as well as advertised. And these announcements tend to imply that such weapons are available now or in the near future when they are years away from usable deployment.
Japan isn't threatened - you carrier groups are. About time "we" (as the Occident) do something about these particular missiles. If I was an admiral my panties would be in a bunch for the danger they represent, and the abandon of the railgun program (I don't trust lasers). They better work, too, or else all that WWII-warfare stuff is at stakes.
Oh, it was probably a failure apart for the launch itself (even regular missiles are a b!tch to shoot down), but at least, tries are on, and it's a step in the right direction.
Like we should trust what they say, anyway. Besides, how did they got an hypersonic missile to test it with?
For the same reason any EMP is used in the first place: To scramble their electronics, including, maybe, their guidance systems. I read somewhere that these missiles are especially hi-tech. Heck - It's military secrets and new tech. How would I know?
