I watched a piece on Impossible Engineering about this project, truly an amazing bit of engineering.

Glad to see it was ultimately successful, but yes, the surrounding area is poisoned for a long time.

Looks like yet another government boondoggle designed to enrich a ruling political class and its capitalist cronies.

“Dr Michael Clark, from the NRPB, told BBC News Online: "The
assertion that the UK received 40% of the radiation dose of the Ukraine
    is simply not true.

"Other studies, in Hungary and Germany, and even in Ukraine itself,
have found no link between the disaster and infant mortality."
BBC, Chernobyl scare dismissed by experts, Wednesday, 26 June, 2002, 18:02 GMT 19:02 UK.

Until the next tremor and the dome cracks. BTW: Do they mean "the area" within the dome or the exterior "area"?

Chernobyl was a catastrophe for sure; but so was Fukashima and it still is. Every day Japan purposely spills 300 tons of radioactive waste into the Pacific Ocean, and there are millions of tons of waste stored in containers which are also leaking. There is still debate going on about what to do with the stored waste. Dumping it into the ocean is one 'option' talked about . Fukashima was built on the shores of the most seismically active places in the world. One which is famous for its tsunamis. This should have been a no-brainer when deciding where to build the reactors. Somewhere in the mix, the bottom line must have been the deciding factor, because this is where Fukashima and many other nuclear reactors were built.

Since Fukashima, the Pacific fishing industry has been decimated. Whales, porpoises, birds, seals, and dead fish are washing up today on our shores bleeding from their gills, ulcers all over their bodies, emaciated and starving. Scientists are baffled though. They don't have clue as to what could be causing the marine devastation. Conveniently, Fukashima and the fact that it is still spewing large quantities of radiation (300 tons/day) into the Pacifc is not even mentioned. In fact no one even talks about the biggest leak of radioactive waste in the history of the world. Unlike Chernobyl which is still being talked about, Fukashima has been forgotten.

This amnesia over Fukashima has been well orchestrated by academia, corporate America, government, the nuclear industry, and the MSM. No one sees any evil, hears any evil or speaks any evil about Fukashima. Could this be because the nuclear plant was built and maintained (supposedly) by General Electric which is one of the biggest companies in the world? The company has influence over many news outlets, many politicians, institutes of higher education which is why this disaster of epic proportions is never talked about. Even the WHO seems to be involved with the coverup, and of what the disaster continues to do to our environment. After the accident, it raised the safety levels of radiation exposure. The EPA also raised the radiation levels considered safe for humans. Obama was monitoring the beaches on the West Coast right after the disaster. Radiation levels were up, but one day out of the blue he decided to halt the monitoring. Radiation detectors in Canada were turned off when they started to detect higher radiation levels from Fukashima.

The consequences of the disaster include elevated radiation levels in the Pacific which get worse every year. Beaches that were once spectacular with beautiful shells, star fish, crabs, birds are now barren wastelands. Fishing populations have crashed by 91%, (which is probably a good thing because no one should be eating fish or shell fish from the Pacific), and extremely high amounts radiation levels are found in many fish. Ninety-eight percent of the sea floor is covered with dead sea creatures. This is being blamed on global warming. Couldn't be radiation killing them.

I have heard some people say that Fukashima could be an extinction level event. This could be true as the technology to remove debris from damaged reactors doesn't exist, according to the Fukashima Decommissioning Company. So until the technology does exist nuclear waste will continue to pour into the Pacific Ocean by the hundreds of tons per day.
    West Coast beach before Fukashima.

I wonder if they mean human habitation. The animals there seem to be doing fine.
