BORODYANKA/LVIV, Ukraine, March 4 (Reuters) - The largest nuclear power plant in Europe is on fire following a Russian attack, Ukraine's foreign minister said on Friday, as he called for a security zone and firefighters to be allowed to tackle the incident.

A generating unit at the plant has been hit during an attack by Russian troops and part of the station is on fire, RIA news agency cited the Ukrainian atomic energy ministry as saying on Friday.

A plant spokesperson told RIA that background levels of radiation had not changed.

"Russian army is firing from all sides upon Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe," Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote on Twitter.

"Fire has already broke out ... Russians must IMMEDIATELY cease the fire, allow firefighters, establish a security zone!"

There has been fierce fighting in the area about 550 kilometers (342 miles) southeast of Kyiv, the mayor of the nearby town of Energodar said in an online post. He said there had been casualties, without giving details.

    [END SNIP]

This plant is huge, supplying one-quarter of the power for all of Ukraine. A meltdown here, would be ten times worse than Chernobyl. It does have have a much better design, however. While there is no immediate threat of a nuclear catastrophe, the Russians are STILL SHELLING THE PLANT!

By any convention of war, when it comes to nuclear plants, the military should cease it's attack, and allow local firefighters to put out the fire in the plant. The EU has also offered its assistance. (The Euro is down in trading, based on this news).

Cutting off Ukranians' power has been a focus of Russian forces, since their invasion began. This plant is in the southeastern part of Ukraine, not that far from the breakaway Republics, which Putin is there "to protect." Also, any nuclear emissions into the atmosphere, because the wind blows from West to East, would blow into Russia.

Yes, because Russia would be in a possible radiation zone in the case of a meltdown. Doesn't make much sense.

Putin needs to be overthrown now.

This isn’t going to end until someone takes out Putin. Maybe his generals will look at what Russia will look like if they take Ukraine but everything else in life has been sanctioned away and their economy is in shambles.

Agree, Putin has done almost as much damage to the Russian and it's people than he's done in Ukraine.

    Some additional, general info:

There are 4 active, nuclear power plants in Ukraine, supplying 50% of Ukranians' electric power. This lessens the feasibility of Ukraine shutting them all down now, in advance of Russian arrival.

Seems like a good reason to me for European forces to get involved in driving these monsters out of Ukraine. No more *****-footing around.

    We can hope.

Perhaps it will be a team effort; that is, maybe the bravery of growing crowds of citizen protesters, will help some with access to Putin, find their own courage.

As a side note, Putin shut down the last independent Russian t.v. station today. For their last few seconds on the air, the station broadcast Swan Lake, for its significance, in the mind's of Russian people: this is what the former Soviet government had put on television during the protests and coup attempt, trying to shield the public from the truth of what was happening, when that government finally fell.

Not sure why they are putting up a resistance here or specifically from inside the perimeter of the plant. The city and plant are surrounded with no chance of reinforcements changing that fact.

Well, I guess your argument could be applied to ALL of the Ukranian resistance. They'd originally tried to stop the Russians, because they hadn't wanted to lose all their power, of course. But that does not explain Russian forces firing directly on the plant! Zalenskyy has put out, on social media, that the Russians have thermal imaging, on their artillery-- IOW: they are not hitting the plant, by mistake.

Why are we so certain that the leaders of a country being attacked by a global superpower have no reason to bend the truth in their favor?

No news is trustworthy news, especially not news that happened a few hours ago.

No this applies only to the plant, even from a pro-Ukranian stance resistance from inside the plant is risks the future of the country even if Russia leaves. Its not on the border like Chernobyl and gets it water from the Dnieper river. You risk contaminating a fertile area and the main river. There is resistance there and its documented in multiple sources for several days now. Even if you win and get a disaster there, you pretty much lose; costs if compared to Chernobyl clean up are crippling in the least.

I posted a Reuters link that was just updated, its not the plant but a training facility outside the perimeter (So reports of what exactly is happening vary). You could technically bend that to say the plant is being attacked. Sounds like we need to wait because as you said the news is fresh and not clear at this point.

I’m quite shocked. But they want to shut iff the power to like 1/4th of the country in winter.
I’m sure it is being shut down and that is the point. But also at this point, I would not be surprised if the intend to create a nuclear catastrophe to set back Ukraine a couple of generations.
Also, Russia is in the oil business, not the green business.
Hopefully the wind is blowing toward Russia.

    Who says it isn't?

I'm seeing heaps of propaganda from all sides. Each side swearing the other would make Satan look like a bed wetter.

You have no idea who you're sticking up for. There's no good side here...

If that was the desire, a single missile hit on the step up transformers sending power out of the plant would do the trick. Looking at Google maps, there's a nice field of them well clear of the reactors.

Beyond that, the reactors themselves are Russian. They know exactly how to destroy them because they know exactly how they are built.

Instead there's talk about tanks shelling buildings... And fear merchants screaming about Chernobyl times ten.

    Please.

Biden needs to sanction Putin personally to send a message. He said further sanctions are for deteriorating behavior, well this is deteriorating.

    Even Chernobyl wasn't Chernobyl.

The great tragedy of Chernobyl was the response to the emergency. A better, more honest, reaction could have saved lots of lives.

Were you aware that the other reactors on site continued to operate for decades afterward?

a plague or a war that affects the people that manage a nuclear power plant, could have very bad effects
