Even more fun fact: The highest % of the African American vote Obama got was 95% in 2008. That was a whopping 5% more than Al Gore got and a towering 7% more than Michael Dukakis - two of the whitest men ever created (Hilary also got 88%). So, African Americans were already voting Dem in overwhelming numbers no matter what colour the candidate was.

Of course, Romney & McCain weren't the first white men to run for President and there is no history of white people being enslaved, suffering wide scale & severe discrimination or being subject to widespread voter suppression (though if you read some white posters on PF you might think that). So, hardly a surprise that his vote was slightly higher than the average for Dem candidates.

If you are looking for an 'identity' related change in voting behaviour you might want to check out Mormons. Their vote spiked from low 60s to high 70s in the 2012 election before returning to low 60s in 2016. of course, that doesn't really fit the narrative, does it?

Sorry but I was old enough to be aware of all the presidents since Eisenhower an not a one until Trump did I consider any of them to be racist.

Actually, it might make sense. When Obama was President, the racists were in a constant state of rage. He didn't have to do anything other than exist. The health care legislation created a lot of right-wing backlash, and somehow this too was melded into a black thing. Everything he did was twisted to be anti-white. So yes, people I knew who were clearly racists [couldn't hide it when Obama got elected] expressed their racist fury every day. Now that they have a con man hugging flags and telling American Congresswomen to go home, his minions are perfectly happy. They are getting the country they want.

Every day a black man was President, the right wing was going out of their minds.

 

One wonders why social scientists bother doing research at all. The Politically Correct always know all the correct answers to every question and that any research contradicting the politically correct answer is, ipso facto, flawed.
