Or makes the parts in the US again as it used to do

When American companies buy or manufacture stuff in china they usually end up teaching the chinese how to do it

Which is certain to hurt America in the long run

With examples all over the world to pull from, it is very clear no Nation can grow and prosper economically by simply servicing the products another country produces.

Massive trade deficits are a danger to our country and must be addressed where Nations have been employing unfair trade practices.

GM was putting out garbage. My Dad and his buddies bought VW bugs for cheap work cars and got 300,000 miles out of them with none to very few troubles but changing the oil and setting valve clearance every 3000 miles. The word spread out in flyover country that Detroit sold an inferior product. Gas efficiency was secondary. It was the high dependability that sold VW.

What are you doing throwing facts out there! It is unbelievable that due to 50 years of bad trade agreements we got ourselves in this bind. Now when we try to extract ourselves from it we are seen as protectionist. When all we want are similar protections that the partner already has in place.

    Exactly.

When one reviews the tariff schedules over the years for member countries of the WTO, it's crystal clear the US trading partners have been engaging in unfair trade practices.

Trying to hide this fact through propaganda and public relations blitzes doesn't change the facts.

As for the rest who simply support the propaganda because it fits their bias, does it really matter what their opinion is?

Like Harley-Davidson, right? They opened a new plant in Thailand because of the tariffs on their international sales. The greater part of their sales are not here in the US, they're overseas and the tariffs were hurting. Harley still has assembly plants in the US but production is overseas. No more 'made in the USA' label.

    Wrong.
    https://www.bbc.com/news/business-44604280

Harley-Davidson plans to shift some motorcycle production away from the US to avoid the "substantial" burden of European Union tariffs.

Last week, the EU imposed retaliatory tariffs on US goods, including bourbon, orange juice and motorcycles.

The measures are a response to new US duties on steel and aluminium imports.

Wisconsin-based Harley-Davidson said the increased cost from the tariffs threaten its international sales, which it has been trying to expand.

The company has assembly plants in Australia, Brazil, India and Thailand as well as in the US.

It said it would raise investment in its international plants, though it did not say which ones.

"To address the substantial cost of this tariff burden long-term, Harley-Davidson will be implementing a plan to shift production of motorcycles for EU destinations from the US to its international facilities to avoid the tariff burden," the company said.

Harley-Davidson said it expected the ramp-up in production to take nine to 18 months.

US President Donald Trump tweeted his disappointment at Harvey-Davidson's decision which he characterised as the company waving the white flag of defeat.

Whether they moved to Thailand before or after the imposing of new tariffs on imports doesn't change a single thing. The decision by Harley Davidson to move production outside of the United States was a response based solely on the Trump tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Harley did the US a bad turn. 35 years ago We begged Japan no to produce any VTwin motorcycles until Harley could learn how to build a modern bike. We threatened to ban any bike larger than 750CC. This is how they now pay our country back.

They're a national security threat in that American car companies dont want to compete with superior quality, lower cost German and Japanese alternatives to their tired, overpriced union built crap.

And since after WWII the US effectively adopted the old fascist fusion of corporate and state power, GM interests are national interests.

A little correction ... HD decided this AFTER the EU announced counter punitiative tariffs against Trumps crappy punitiative tariffs on steel and aluminium from the EU ... because their bikes were named for it!

Lol ... in which fairy tale book did you read this nonsense please?
Do you seriously believe that the US had any power to tell any Japanese motorcycle company such a thing and they followed then? Really? Please wake up!

I have no clue why you won't understnad that I answered your questions quite well. Yes, they are a barrier, but you know which further reasons tariffs often have ... good reasons? So a total free market is a myth and will maybe happen at Utopia but not on this planet with a full realistic view!

With all due respect to your person ... so please do not misunderstand ... my answer to your question is:

"Because Donald Trump is an idiot and thinks no more than from 24:00 pm to 00:00 on the clock ... on such things!"

Take the current example with the tariff difference on car imports in the US (2.5%) and in the EU (10%).
The key message that comes from Trump and his supporters is that this is a clear difference as to why less US cars are sold in the EU, so let's beat punitaitve tariffs on the EU and especially on the evil Germans. Right?

I have more than proven with facts that this is bullcrap and the truth is quite different!
And I made it clear that nobody in the world would be upset if Trump raised the US tariff from 2.5% to the same 10%.
But it's supposed to be 25% directly ... and what is he aiming for? That the EU breaks in and surrenders? He can wait for that until hell freezes. What comes out at the most is that either both raise 10% tariff or 2.5% or something else to x% in between. Exemption from duty = 0.00% tariff will definitely not exist!

But you can also negotiate this all normal and peaceful without playing the impending idiot, like Trump to get this result which please both!
