    And still few in the mainstream have been critical of the sanctions, even as they lament the suffering of Venezuelans.

    Former US Ambassador to Venezuela William Brownfield, admitted that the purpose of the sanctions is to make the people suffer until they cry "uncle" and force Maduro from power:

    Two things can be true at once:

    1. US motives are suspect.

    2. Maduro is a terrible dictator.

    The above is a great example of how to attempt to build a case out of selected quotes taken out of context. This is how "fake news" is constructed. It is intellectually dishonest.

    The US too often pours on the vinegar when honey would suffice. Sanctions that directly target or obviously effect the general population are not justifiable. Not in Iraq, not in Russia, not in Venezuela.

    Exactly. Lifting sanctions will not help the people but only the socialists in charge who are responsible for the fiasco in Venezuela and the army which protects them and enforces their directives.

    Isnt red cross an NGO though?

    allowing venezuela to fend for itself would require not giving financial backing to the opposition. why is it wrong for russia to intfere in foreign elections but right for america to do so? stinks of hypocrisy.
