Question: Trump’s Tariffs? In one year, 1st to 3rd? Hong Kong has trade deficits, but yet has a higher per capita income. What’s the cause? Hong Kong and Singapore economies more capitalistic than America’s?

Trump is not an economic genius defending free markets, he’s a dogmatic pragmatist appealing to the fears and ignorance of the American masses. While it is true he’s no Marxist or Engles , it is also true he’s no Frédéric Bastia; he's closer to Keynes in the economy, and an American ”Charles Maurras” in politics.

His tariffs will lead to economic disaster.

Oh don't worry as it relates to the list cited in the OP, China is not even top 10 by their metrics and is following economically competitive powerhouses like Ireland.

 

Singapore has a unified society and intense rule of law with intense enforcement. A divided, lax society can never compete with that.

I heard he is now backing down on the 5g ban, this is confusing US companies, do they buy China equipment or wait for Americans to build it? do American companies build 5g or will China under price them and not make it worth it?

agree, I support Trump on Tariffs, Democrats support this, Republicans traditionally have not, this is one task I think Trump could do as he can bring both sides together to support it.. I hope he can pull it off and not let his ego get in the way, Trump fragile ego is his biggest weakness as it allows him to be easily manipulated

had Tariff's always been there we would consider them the norm, as they were not and are now being added, there will be some short term pain, if Trump pulls it off the public will forgive him, if he doesn't, they wont be happy

it's like the huge corporate tax cuts, much easier to give it then it is to take way

people have become accustomed to cheap stuff vs quality stuff that last years longer, now if US companies just charge more for cheap stuff vs quality stuff, that would be a shame too, but they may take advantage of people liking cheap stuff too now that it's happened

Again, if China is a military threat, make the case, take away her “most favored nation status, and boycott her. But an economic threat, she can’t even beat Singapore or Switzerland on a per capita basis.

Trump’s tariffs must logically have a detrimental effect on the American economy—it takes money from private wealth and puts in the hands of the state. This means less spending, less demand, less jobs, and less private wealth for American citizens.

This is Econ 101.—classes Trump didn’t take, or failed miserably, or economic principles he delusionally believes his will can over rule.

 

China can do the hacking if we use their equipment... they will have their devices, their software updates on all communications infrastructure, this will include self driving cars, surgery, and tons more

you think dealing with China is hard now, wait till they have that control too, they could shut us down hard

Of course China has a better plan. They steal technology secrets and use cheaper slave labor to make a cheaper product Americans buy. Are you for increasing American wages and better benefits?

Some of these countries ahead of the US, have much freer market economies, creating for the enterprising, fantastic opportunities to make a bundle. And they do it greedily and happily.

Trump's tariffs are magic fairy dust sprinkled on the masses to mystify and satisfy the economically ignorant, the racially motivated, and the tribal nationalists.
