It wasn't just Israel, even though they want a Kurd homeland as a buffer between Syria and Iran. Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan were all drooling to grab a share of Syria. The main initiator though was Erdogan. He wanted Idlib and Aleppo; Syria's largest city and industrial center.

Much of the problems had to do with Sunni 'elitism', since the Assads were Alawites and were always looked on as being inferior. That the Assad's managed to gain power, had to do with the army, since serving in the military was considered below the Sunni's.

The meetings for the 'so called' Free Syria Army were held in Turkey and we were training and arming them - and the arms were conveniently passed on to Al Nusra by the men. They were also passed to ISIS by Bilal Erdogan in exchange for Syria's stolen oil. The connivance and deceptions all ended with the advent of Russia - except for the American people who'll believe anything.

Jordan in the meantime was to be given part of Syria as a homeland for the Palestinians. As for Israel, they believed Assad would be gone in two weeks, and that the Golan Heights could be given to the Christians and Alawites as a buffer between them and the Muslims. That changed when oil was discovered there and it was annexed.

Personally think it would have been a lot smarter for Israel to have leased the Golan Heights for 50 plus years since they needed it for their security, and to split the profit with Damascus. I think peace would have been well worth it.
