    I was looking for Obama's legacy just the other day. Now, we've found it. Economic failure and weakness- that is the Obama presidency's legacy.

    America should be number one.

    But if Obama staying office 4 more years we won't even break the top 10.

    I like the article but you are missing the entire point IMHO. We are no longer competitive because of an orchestrated effort to remove competitiveness from our economy. This has been a standard operational procedure by the two party scam for decades, and you keep insisting it is the other party who is doing the damage when it is obviously a joint effort.

    Innovation is our key to productivity, yet it is stifled in several ways, by a manipulative interfering source, our own government.

    Taxes being the number one key issue, and taxes are so high because of the need to keep the two party scam in power over any other possible “choice”. The government is too big because it has to be to support the rich/elites domain over the current plutocracy. But the tax burden is not where some would have you believe, on the rich. On the contrary the burden is on the backs of the middle working class, specifically to keep them, non-competitive.

    Regulations are also a major deterrent to the innovative nature of a once prosperous economy. And again not the regulations of necessity to insure conservative levels of coherent responsibility, when it comes to blatant pollution, that destroys the quality of our air, health/safety hazards, and the poisoning of our water supply which is only increasing these days, but regulations in place to specifically give the advantage to the selective few. While tax breaks are “awarded” to the favorable entities, or direct exemptions issued to assure they will not be effected, the less connected and the small business entrepreneurs. Only the smaller businesses get the blunt of these regulations, which is nothing more than cronyism tactics, by order of the best government corporate money can buy. AKA, the two political parties.

    At the moment the fact that manufacturing is still exported at formidable numbers, in reality most of the productivity “isn’t” accomplished by workers, but by technological advances that eliminate the need for a human work force, so the only industries that are growing that actually fit the needs of the ever growing actual work force we are left with due to outsourcing is in the service positions. The bright side of the situation there is these jobs for the most part still need the human factor to be accomplished proficiently, and outsourcing and the illegal trespassers usually do not fit the bill. Only problem there is that there isn’t enough upper middle class/elites to support such a growing work force, so the wages/salaries they have enjoyed in the past will begin to decline also, even though the cost of living continues to be on the rise.

    We are in the mess we are in because of the manipulative nature of this plutocracy that exists because of the two party scam, and not one party or the other. Both are equally responsible and both are doing exactly as they have been ordered to do, and as your article expresses rather well;

    "A number of weaknesses are chipping away at its competitiveness...the U.S. fiscal imbalances and continued political deadlock over resolving these challenges,"

    …“any” challenges, this nation faces, economically or socially, because they are not considered challenges to the plutocracy, they are considered business as usual. The extremist nut job position is the epitome of the conquer and divide mentality that is destroying the very fiber of our nation, and deadlock is the only plan that the rich/elites need to maintain their power over the plutocracy.

    Keep playing the game they need your gullibility to sustain that power.

    The growth of the Iron Triangle (excessive taxation, excessive regulation, excessive litigation) began back in the early 60s. The cumulative effect is obvious. Wait til boiler MACT causes rolling blackouts.

    Clearly government is squarely and aggressively in the way of US competitiveness.

    A new political alignment will be needed to reverse this process.

    Democrats view personal success as a negative.

    It must be stamped out before people realize theyll succeed without the government.
