So what are they gonna do about Russia? What is anyone going to do? They're not gonna do anything that's what! No one's going to mess with Russia.

:), I think the options seem limited at this point?

The Tillerson trip next week will hopefully prove to be very informative.

This chess match is fascinating on a number of levels. Russia's interest is clearly with the warm water port. Assad has been instrumental in seeing to Russia's need vis-a-vis that port, but his willingness to kill Syrian civilians by whatever means necessary, including illegal ones

Exactly. If Russia can come up with an Assad alternative, it would probably be considered a positive development.

Agreed. Once Assad begins to be seen as too toxic by the Russians, the Syrian situation might actually improve.

Russia has a few very important questions to answer.

Yes, the options are limited. But they are not zero.

No, not zero, but what comes next may be suitable for one but no the other and vice versa.

It's just things I have read or heard on tv. For instance I will notice - ah so that means Putin will consider getting rid of Assad. An example would be today someone on the BBC was saying he would be ok with Assad going as long as he knew that Islamists would not get Damascus. What I am saying is that what I have heard does not make it sound so intractable.

Well maybe the US is and maybe it is not. The reason from the UK point that our Gov did not win the last time to bomb Assad for chemical weapons was because people decided to bring out of the cupboard that the opposition to Assad was pretty much ISIS. In the video below at about 5.44m they talk about a leaked conversation a few weeks ago between John Kerry when he was Sec of State 'and some high level opposition members' where Kerry told them or suggested to them at least that the US actually watched Isis gain strength in Syria because they believed they would topple Assad. Kerry said he watched ISIS grow hoping that would push Assad to the negotiating table and Russia got involved because they were scared ISIS would take Damascus. She also says that the French Intelligence Agency in 2012 produced a document showing that the Syrian insurgency was dominated by Isis in Iraq, the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria and salafism. They spoke about this in a positive way, that there could maybe be a Salafi principality in Syria, they also predicted the rise of Al Qaeda in Iraq even the establishment of the Islamic State - they even predicted it in the cities it would happen. She believes that the US have been aware that the Syrian Opposition have been largely of this type since 2011. Nonetheless they have been supporting them hoping they will get rid of Assad and by doing this have prolonged this war resulting in the massive death and destruction we have seen - all to get Assad out and nothing to do with chemical weapons.

This morning I was watching a Syrian Dr (phd I think) being interviewed on the tv about how she felt about Trumps move. She said she just wished everyone would get out and let them solve it. The Syrian revolution began with 3 nos. No to violence, no to sectarianism and no to outside interference. Unfortunately it has become a proxy war. Russia/Iran and certainly Hezbolla on one side and Saudi Arabia/Turkey/Quator etc along with the US, France and the UK. Israel does her own bit on the side.

Israel has been wanting Iran bombed for I cannot remember how long - maybe a decade. Israel and the Republicans were fuming at the agreement which Obama and European countries came to with Iran. From 8.45m she starts to speak about the policy to attack Iran, which has been as I said part of the plan with what is going on with Syria - get rid of Assad first and then go for Iran and she believes this will be what will be happening. She is questioned whether this strike may indeed be a prelude to an attack on Iran. Then she is talking about Yemen, this again is about proxy wars particular Saudi Arabia against Iran. She believes Trump is headed towards some kind of confrontation with Iran but also states the difficulties - not least with US forces in Iraq. She thinks it may be a couple of years down the line.

The bloke then speaks about Seymour Hirsh in the London review of books which questioned the reliability that the previous chemical attack in Syria was by Assad. He suggested that that attack could have been carried out by Syrian rebels helped by Turkey. This was based on a defence intelligence agency assessment which states that the rebels have Sarin. He says this has been confirmed by the UN. She agrees. Sarin was of course the chemical used this week. You might be interested in what was the first part of their conversation when they argue from different sides whether this attack was by Assad or the Syrian rebels.

The reality however is that we do not know if it was Assad or not. Action has been taken without Congress's agreement before anything had been confirmed and now everyone loves Trump and can't get enough of war.

What I said is not grossly incorrect. What is happening is most certainly extremely dangerous. You may be interested to read this article about all the increase in war involvement Trump has been involved in since he took his term in office and the extent to which US soldiers are increasingly being there on the ground - the public not being informed about this and if Obama was bad about drones which he most certainly was Trump has massively increased them. There has also been what he calls an 'explosion' of civilian deaths at the US hands - he says more than 1,000 civilians have been killed by the US in March alone. Do these deaths not matter?

It's not just Syria. Trump is ratcheting up wars across the world
