"Virginia Rep. Randy Forbes, a senior House Republican eyeing a powerful committee chairmanship, is causing friction with some of his colleagues by pushing the House GOP campaign arm to deny support for some of the party’s gay congressional candidates.

Forbes has waged a lengthy crusade to convince his colleagues and the National Republican Congressional Committee brass they shouldn’t back some gay candidates. His efforts on Capitol Hill were described to POLITICO by more than a half-dozen sources with direct knowledge of the talks.

The issue is particularly acute because House Republicans have two promising openly gay candidates in 2014 vying for seats held by Democrats. Richard Tisei, who narrowly lost to Democratic Rep. John Tierney in 2012, is running again in northeastern Massachusetts. And in San Diego, Carl DeMaio, a former city councilman, is trying to knock off Democratic Rep. Scott Peters."

Interesting how fear and hatred can trump even ideology. But good news for Democrats, if the GOP wants to remain openly homophobic....to the point of even LOSING elections rather than support gay candidates who could win.....more's the better for Democrat. Both in winning the seats....and the continuing image of the Republcian Party as bigoted and intolerant, going into a future where the demographics show younger voters are pro-gay rights.

    So....carry on, Rep. Forbes. :)

who he sleeps with in bed should have no bearing on his ability to do the job. Now, if he believes that sleeping with same sex partners entitles you to a protected group status then he should become a Democrat.

sec, I WANT the GOP to keep pandering to folks like you. Sadly, I think they'll instead want to survive as a viable national political party into the 21st Century....and STOP doing it.

    :(

    - - - Updated - - -

As I told sec....unfortunately for Democrats, I think the national GOP will NOT follow Forbes' example.

They're already this close (two fingers a centimeter apart) from dropping the whold gay-bashing agenda. There's no future for a political party that panders to anti-gay bigots anymore

I don't know, the GOP isn't know for trying to have a big tent party anymore.

Where they really ever know for that?

I see them starting to talk about being inclusive but I have as of yet seen any real big party effort to move toward inclusion and bolstering their ranks with diversity.

    It's a paradox.

To survive into the future they MUST go against the sizeable portion of their Base that are bigots and racists.....but when they try for "minority outreach" or backing off from homophobia, that portion of the Base gets mad and threatens to bolt the Party.

At some point, the RNC HOPES...they can slowly edge away from bigotry, start earning the trust of minorities, and the bigots won't notice or will still remain loyal if they can be thrown some "red meat" like gun control or abortion or something.

But pandering to homophobies...long-term? Is doom for the GOP! Younger folks are not bigots.

Both parties hang moderate out to dry. I don't see the DCCC bending over backwards to help conservative's win seats.

I agree. Though I really would like to see the GOP move away from its base in a more inclusive manner. I just really doubt its going to happen.

More likely than not what we're going to see is the slow death by attrition.

    No, I disagree.

I think the Republican Party survives. I think it may hit a VERY rough patch and be faced with a tough choice....to keep pandering to racists, bigots, theocrats, etc or collapse....but I think the final choice will be to cut those folks loose (if as "softly" as possible) and survive.

Big Business guys, the true backbone of the GOP (especially as it comes to money) already seeing that....it's why they are backing off supporting nutso Tea Party primary challengers like Steve Stockman against John Cornyn. They WANT a Republican Party in the future...and if it means telling the Tea Partyers to go to Hell....they'll do it and try to pick up votes from younger libertarians and moderates who might support "less Government, less regulation, less taxes"....if the Religious Right and Birthers and such don't show up at the party.

But the GOP Big Boys WILL find a way to survive and dump the Nutters and Rednecks....one way or the other.

Eh...I think its to late. The fringe has already muscled its way to far into the party. They have in essence nearly completely pushed the moderate republicans out.

I think the tick that is the tea party has dug its way far to deep to be removed whole.

That would be ideology trumping politics. Not sure where you think fear enters into the equation.

Actually the most recent polls show majority of independents supporting Republicans and generic Republican or Democrat polls for the first time in a while showing Republicans in the lead.

And that has what to do with the fringe taking over the Republican Party?

Just pointing out that its drawing moderates in, as opposed to pushing them out as you claimed. You know, directly contradicting your assertion.

Funny, you didn't deny the "hatred"...just the "fear".

Another admission, dixon? If so...thanks. Thought so.

Only 28 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the Republican Party, according to findings from Gallup released Wednesday.

That number represents a nadir for either party since Gallup began asking the question in 1992 and a 10-point drop for the GOP from a month ago. Sixty-two percent said they have an unfavorable opinion of the Republican Party.

Too late now....you didn't mention "hatred" before, just "fear". So I'll be generous and say you aren't afraid of gays, you just....

    well. :)

More Freudian slips, dixon. On this thread you are "subtlely" saying "I don't fear gays...I just hate them" (Note...you have YET to deny it.).....on the other thread you admitted that your opposition to gay marriage is NOT based on "procreation" or "the Constitution"....but on your opposing dignity and respect for gays.

Your typing fingers keep trying to tell the truth, despite what your brains order them to. :)

BTW, back on topic....eventually the Republican Party is going to give up on being politically suicidal....

i.e. pandering to guys like you. Sorry. :)

I made no representations as to who or what is bringing them in. Simply pointing out they are coming in. +7% just in the last month. Probably has more to do with Obamas incompetence than it has to do with Sarah's charm.

    LOL!!

In truth, the names you listed represent to a great degree... what is seriously wrong with this society. (People who who are reasonably critical in their thinking can see/realize that almost intuitively.)

I have a begrudging respect for those who stand their ground on the principles that they believe in... even if I believe their principles are wrong. All too often on the Hill principles fall to the wayside... so its always good to know some will place their principles above filling a seat in the House. So Rep. Forbes has rolled the dice and now the people of Virginia get to decide the outcome of his gambit. If he is not following the will of most Virginians he will be replaced. This is Democracy at its finest!

Hey, I'm all for it! Let the GOP continue to dig it's grave. Let's see- GOP approval rating to date:

    http://www.businessinsider.com/poll-obama-approval-ratings-gop-2013-10

So keep on going GOP! I approve of your self-destruction. Keep excluding more people and go die the death your party richly deserves.

BTW- do you really think discriminating against gay people is a "principle"? Really?
