Why are we not helping Venezuela capitalize on their world's largest known oil reserves? We send money to Israel and we supply arms to Saudi Arabia. Why aren't we doing more to help bring countries in South America out of poverty. All we do is bitch and moan about how they pour across our Mexican border as illegal immigrants. Why aren't we instead investing in their countries helping bring them into the modern world. By helping them we would help ourselves in the long run. Right now the world, including us, could greatly benefit from all that oil down there in Venezuela. American oil companies should be exploring every avenue to gain access to their oil. By helping them we would help ourselves and our NATO ally countries

We need to think long and hard before we decide that supporting one dictator to confront another is a good idea.

It mostly has to do with the current government, the nationalization of the oil industry, and the absolute corruption at every level from the government to business to religion. That's why.

If we really wish to cut down on illegal immigrants, like we claim to, then we should do all we can to help improve every day lives in South America and in our own country.

My impression of the problem here is that many of these countries’ governments don’t actually have their peoples best interests at heart. They siphon the vast majority of aid, money and supplies to enrich themselves and keep their people as miserable as possible precisely so that they can keep sucking off the teat of people sending them that aid and money.

Until you solve the systemic corruption pervasive throughout all of Latin America, you’ll never be able to help these people. Don’t worry, we have Kamala Harris on the job. She’s gonna dig real deep to get at those roots of the problem.

I can assure you their politicians are not a helluva lot different than ours. Greed motivates all of them.

Why enrich our enemies when we have plenty of crude oil and natural gas in the US. Biden froze leases on offshore and onshore federal land ,,, will make believe he unfroze them ,,, but won't issue permits and he knows nobody in their right mind would invest billions with the risk that flows from the US government under Biden being the enemy of the American people in general and energy independence in particular. We will suffer Bidenflation until Democrats no longer have the ability to sabotage investments in energy independence ,,, at least 3 years.

Oil has been producing an economy for Venzuela for most all of the 20th century. It's third world status isn't caused by a lack oil being produced but due to authoritarian actions. I do believe they still have CITCO oil execs imprisoned...including Amerians ..when the government took over operations....not sure exactly what happened...but this is not a nation to partner with at this time.

We have nothing compared to the proven reserves of Venezuela, they have more than the Saudis or Russia. They could resolve all of the current world energy shortage problems.

One (maybe two) word(s) that seem(s) to have totally affected most countries, especially and including the US, beyond any and all levels of rule and governance: Corruption and/or Greed (pick one, they both end up in the same place).
It's also the real reason why the US capitol is in total partisan gridlock.

And there probably isn't a country in the world that does not have one or the other or both affecting some of the government decisions in one way or another.

Look what oil wealth has done for the Saudis and other middle east countries. Venezuela could be wealthier than any of them.

~ The reason is the same for Mexico and several other oil rich countries. Government corruption and influence.

Do you honestly believe there is anything such thing as a completely honest government??? They need our help and oil companies and the NATO countries need their oil right now.

Mexico's oil assets are not in the same league as what Venezuela has. If they do not capitalize on their huge oil assets now before the full onset of EV's, they will blow their chance to become a truly wealthy nation.

Probably has to do with the fact our dumbasses have sanctioned their country; promoted a violent overthrow of the government; and recognized an illegitimate leader (Juan Guido) as President when he was never elected.

    Illegal regime change has costs.

Why? So we can give more money to people that don’t believe in democracy and abuse their citizens?

Venezuela screwed up their own economy by handing out lots of freebies when oil prices were high and then not retrenching when prices dropped.

I don't believe the Venezuelans are willing to do business with us. My fingers are crossed that we return to congressional grid lock with the next election. I little less government would go a long way.

Canada has 200 bbls in their oil sands and maybe a five times that much that could be recovered, not as much as Venezuela but more than enough if they deal with aboriginals and environmentalists laying in front of work crews building pipelines.

We did that. Did that effectively- until 1976, when the Venezuela government nationalized their oil industry- which means they took over the constructs of the private enterprises running oil production and threw them out of the country.

Venezuela has been plagued by a chain of socialist governments who have steadily destroyed it economically. I managed a contract project down there in the late 80's. Wasn't as bad then as now- but the day I flew into Caracas, a riot against government had just killed 500 people, marshal law and curfews were in effect. The government owns all oil rights, there is no private oil industry to deal with, and I can understand why nobody would want to work with their government. The people were very good, the government garbage- even then. It was once a booming nation, the leading economy in South America.

When I was there, the Bolivar, their dollar, was worth about 32 cents USD. Today the "new" Bolivar, or VEF, trades 1 VEF = 0.000004 USD. That's 25,000 VEF to one USD. About 1/3 of the nation can't feed itself adequately. IF the right conditions existed, their oil industry could probably be brought back to high productivity. IF- but right now, they don't.

Venezuela is in a state of poverty because of what it has tolerated. Nothing we can do will change that in the long run- the people there must fix the elements of the country, and our propping it up only makes that less necessary- and delays it. You can't help those who won't help themselves, and currently- the government there sucks, and the people aren't fighting it.
