To me this is very much like our overthrow of the Mossadegh government in Iran all those years ago, or our involvement in Ukraine and so many other countries.

The facts are that very much effort is made by the federal government to overthrow the governments of other countries, legitimate governments.

Far more effort there than any effort to get things right in this country. With homeless everywhere, Washington is spending money on perpetual war and foreign intrigue. For shame.

And reports this morning have it that the US Embassy will remain open in defiance.

The only lessons seem to learn are those they learn from failure. I assume the American people need to fail economically to learn the lessons taught by others. Hopefully it will happen after I'm gone.

There is some logic to that

America was not in danger of a new Great Depression as long as the WWII generation was running things

Because they grew up during the last one

But now clueless baby boomers are in charge

and their childhood memories are sex and drugs and rock n roll

That's a ridiculous statement. Economic growth during the baby boomer era has been spectacular. Please go do some reading before you post.

Yes, they are obviously hoping Venezuela will get violent with them. No doubt they have gunmen inside ready to get it started. Possibly the US will bomb them but I cannot see the US putting boots on the ground in Venezuela having just heard their army is 250,000, and they have another 1,000,000 on standby well prepared to welcome the US and the army are standing firm behind their legitimate President.

They are also talking about trying to sanction all their oil, in the hope of absolutely making sure they will starve them into submission or just starve them. These people have been persecuted by the US for far too long. Someone has to free them.

Venezuela's big, big mistake is that it has the world's biggest oil reserves beneath its soil that obviously belong solely to America. And it has the cheek to sell its oil to anyone who cares to pay the asking price for it.

How Venezuela could be quite so stupid as to allow this quirk of fate to happen is beyond me.

The best outcome therefore, is to regime change the president, who stupidly won his mandate in a free and fair election, and put a US beard answerable to Exxonmobil in his place.

    Job done.

The majority of Venezuela's oil exports go to the United States and those exports increased last year. They increased even though Venezuela's production dropped.

Juan Guaido who wouldn't have been voted in as dog catcher, decided to make himself president, so naturally Washington recognized him - it's called democracy in action. We have Rubio to blame for this latest fiasco, who no doubt wanted to please some well heeled Venezuelan friends in Miami.

Gangsterism in Venezuela by George Galloway:

You could scour the bowels of US imperial crimes, from the Mexican-American War to the Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam, and you won’t find a more brazen cynical act gangsterism than that which is now underway against oil-rich Venezuela.

Not since Hitler justified blitzing Poland by claiming it had encroached on the frontier into Nazi Germany has a more blatant set of falsehoods been adduced as a pretext for conflict.

In Venezuela, it will quickly become a civil war that will most likely draw in other countries from Cuba to Colombia and Brazil (as I previously predicted here) with incalculable consequences – not least for the world’s oil prices.

Before they drop the bombs, they drop the narrative, of course. And the disinformation bombardment in Venezuela has been one of the longest bombing runs in history. Massive sums of US money have been spent on media distortion, subversion, sabotage, military coups, and threats of invasion throughout the Chavez-Maduro era.

This would be humorous, if it wasn't leading to a civil war, and one which could engulf Columbia, Brazil, Cuba and maybe others as well.

    Venezuela:

“And you see this man, who nobody knows in Venezuela—you ask in the streets, ‘Who is Juan Guaidó?’ and nobody knows him—but he’s being pushed to say that he is the new president, by the US”,

    Washington:

The US government has been calling on Nicolas Maduro to step down “in favour of a legitimate leader reflecting the will of the Venezuelan people”.

Eleven countries in the Lima Group, which was created in 2017 to deal with the Venezuela issue, signed a resolution backing Guaidó as president, and the European Council and Parliament both backed the National Assembly but fell short of recognizing Guaidó as interim president. Mexico, Russia, China, Syria and Cuba, however, reiterated their recognition of Maduro. At least Canada, the US and Brazil now recognize Guaidó as president. The OAS is holding an emergency session today in Washington to discuss the issue and Guaidó's delegation will demand Maduro's ambassador's seat.

Then you don't believe in democracy and the will of the people - or for that matter in law since Guaido is illegitimate according to Venezuelan law. Are you for real? You do know that this will lead to civil war, and will probably engulf other nations as well.

If you think by having S. Americans kill one another off will solve our immigration problem, then guess again? Facilitating wars in the Middle East certainly didn't, they only worsened the problem.

You advocating for democracy is like Goering advocating for a better diet... Not really credible at this point.

However Mr Guaido has urged all foreign embassies in the country to disobey Mr Maduro's orders and not remove their diplomats.

Backed by hundreds of thousands of protesters and the support of the United States, Mr Guaido has declared himself interim president and called for free elections to end the rule of Mr Maduro.

In a statement minutes after Mr Guaido's declaration, US President Donald Trump recognised him as Venezuela's legitimate interim president.

That was swiftly followed by similar statements from Canada and a slew of right-leaning Latin American governments, including Venezuela's neighbours Brazil and Colombia.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also released a statement rejecting Mr Maduro's attempt to break diplomatic ties.

Demonstrators clogged avenues in eastern Caracas, chanting "Get out, Maduro" and "Guaido, Presidente," while waving national flags.

Mr Guaido, 35, has energised the Opposition with a campaign to declare Mr Maduro a usurper after elections last year widely regarded as fraudulent, and has promised a transition to a new government in a nation suffering a hyperinflationary economic collapse......snip~

Maybe the Aussies got the reporting wrong, huh?

Just after I wrote that I watched a Real News and it appears that what the US is hoping for is to be able to get some sections of the army over and create a civil war in Venezuela - so we have seen a couple of those Syria and Yemen.

Venezuela General notices this and pledges support for the Government

Venezuelan general says US-backed 'criminal plan' risks civil war

I think one of the first things I ever remember being taught about history was that civil war was the worst thing a country could ever face - why in general they find another country to go to war with to avoid it.

Now this is well worth a watch whatever your position is if you want to hear some reality. It is Democracy Now speaking to
Alfred de Zayas Former Independent Expert at the UN.

He has been in Venezuela over the years investigating the situation there. He knows at first hand that a lot of the information that the US News brings to the US concerning the situation is fake news. He knows that what the US and the rest of the unfree world which is running along to back the US up for some reason is doing is illegal. I dare you watch it.

Former U.N. Expert: The U.S. Is Violating International Law by Attempting a Coup in Venezuela

Arresting opposition leaders stops an election being free & fair.
Jailing hundreds of political prisoners stops an election being free & fair.
Closing critical media outlets stops an election being free & fair.
Shooting demonstrators in the street stops an election from being free & fair.
One party controlling the body that oversees the election stops an election from being free and fair.
One party controlling the Judiciary that oversees electoral laws stops an election from being free and fair.
Illegally replacing an entire elected parliamentary chamber because voters elected your opposition stops an election from being free & fair.
Bribing voters who are starving because of your failed policies in order to get their votes stops an election from being free & fair.

Stop filling your head with Counterpunch - a magazine still trying to make excuses for Pol Pot - and read Human Right's Watch. Read the UN report. Stop making excuses for dictators just because you like their politics.
