    The Venezuelan opposition have become very unpopular after passing a bill giving them and their supporters amnesty for their past crimes. The Maduro government, who all commentators agreed was on his last legs and would not be re-elected, is now expected to be voted back into office.

    In 2016, the economic crisis led to the opposition winning a majority in the National Assembly. One of their first acts was to pass an amnesty law. The law described 17 years of crimes including violent felonies and terrorism committed by the opposition. It was an admission of crimes back to the 2002 coup and through 2016. The law demonstrated violent treason against Venezuela. One month later, the Supreme Court of Venezuela ruled the amnesty law was unconstitutional. US media, regime change advocates and anti-Venezuela human rights groups attacked the Supreme Court decision, showing their alliance with the admitted criminals.

    There must not be another Vietnam in Venezuela! Handz off Venezuela.

    In its Art.4, the Bill confirms the above with breath-taking eloquence:

    Amnesty shall be granted to acts regarded as crimes or misdemeanours when such acts have been or might have been committed for participating, organizing or calling demonstrations, protests, or meetings for political purposes, expressing ideas or spreading information for political motives, or making or promoting actions, proclamations, political agreements or statements deemed to be aimed at changing the constitutional order or the official government, whether or not accompanied by conspiracy actions. In such cases, amnesty shall be granted to the following criminal acts:

    a) Incitement to disobey the law, incitement to hatred and crime apology;
    b. Incitement to crime;
    c. Assault and battery;
    d. Violence or resistance to authority, and disobedience to authority;
    e. Causing panic in the community or keeping it under distress by the dissemination of false information;
    f. Conspiracy;
    g. Obstruction of public roads with the aim to set up fire and other attacks against passing vehicles;
    h. Damaging transportation systems as well as public IT and communication;
    i. Destruction or damaging of roads and related infrastructure for public communication;
    j. Property damage;
    k. Conspiracy and terrorism;
    l. Importation, manufacture, possession, supply or concealment of explosives or incendiary devices;
    m. Disturbance of public peace;
    n. Insulting a civil servant, in its various forms;
    o. Use of minors to commit crimes;
    p. Arson and other crimes involving danger for the public in general, in various forms;
    q. Treason and other crimes against the Nation;
    r. Rebellion and other related offences;
    s. Mutiny, civil rebellion, treason, military rebellion, incitement to military rebellion, uprising, false alarm, attack and insult to the sentry, disclosure of military secrets, offense to military decorum, misuse of badges medals and military ranks, and theft of items belonging to the Armed Force;
    t. Denial of legally due services;
    u. Concealment;
    v. Illegal possession and misuse of firearms, and the felony of illegal possession of firearms, illegal possession of a firearm and possession of firearms in public places;
    w. Damage to facilities of the National Electric System; and
    x. “Other related offences or those that appear closely related to any of the above.
    ” (Amnesty and National Reconciliation Bill, pp. 9-10)

    'anti-Venezuela human rights groups'. That is pure comedy, as is the rest. The Chavistas have utterly wrecked Venezuela. They have destroyed its democracy, mismanaged the economy to the point that people are starving and have refused to take responsibility for one bit of it. The best thing outsiders can do is demand open, free & fair elections rather than just make excuses.

    You're disseminating fake news. Election monitors from around the world have confirmed each election in Venezuela since 1998 when Chavez was first elected. Despite all Amerikan meddling in Venezuela's affairs the Venezuelan people have rallied behind their socialist party and goverment since 1998. I love their defiant attitude.

    The US has imposed itself and meddled in the gov't of central and south america for a very long time. Much of it has involved looking out for the interests of corporations, like the United Fruit Company. I would think that the nation in question going socialist took away our corporations pulling the wealth out of venezuela. And our foreign policy and duties of our CIA has always for a long time been in corporate and banking interests which of course we call American Interests.

    Venezuela was getting along fine, at least for venezuela, until the price of oil dropped. This was a major source of income to finance their socialism and the too low oil prices had to have hurt their socialism, as it hurt other nations like russia who depends upon oil revenues to finance their gov;t. In fact, some people have said, right or wrong, that the drop in oil prices was intentional. and done at the demand of the US in the middle east, in order to try to starve out russia and venezuela, given their dependence upon oil revenues. And of course we use sanctions too.

    Giving the revolutionaries amnesty for their crimes is like turning murderers loose, and rewards criminality. Banana Republic behavior. And of course since you can bet your bippy our CIA were on their team, our official position will be on the sides of the anti gov't forces. That we have so far failed in taking down a gov;t we do not like, as if it were our business, has to be disconcerting for our meddlesome govt.

    If the people of that nation want the socialism that they have, it is none of our business, even if our corporations don't like not being able to pull wealth from that nation as they have done so often in south america. That we have sanctioned this nation, insuring more people will go hungry or even starve as our sanctions did to the half a million kids in Iraq, is as immoral and evil as one can be. That this continues to be our mode of operation should be worthy of our rulers hanging, kicking and soiling their britches, from oak trees.

    There is no excuse for the immorality of our foreign policy. We could not give a rat's arse about the people of venezuela. This is the fact of the matter. It is all about our elite capitalists extracting wealth from a poor nation, as if they were not poor enough already. It is, business as usual.

    Venezuela is in the process of crashing and burning. Death by too much government and not enough freedom.

    Let them wither on the vine. Eventually they'll throw out the scoundrels and join the civilized world.

    No one who quotes from 'Counterpunch' gets to complain about 'fake news', and no nation that repeatedly locks up opposition politicians and completely removes an elected chamber simply because its majority is opposed to the government gets to pretend it is a democracy.

    I love the idea that they do not want to be another american vassal state, nor a servant of the US, or rather, a servant of US corporations. And so far have been able to fight off our attempts to take venezuela back for our special interests.

    Apparently something was not acceptable with the capitalism being practiced and the power of corporations, and the people got tired of it and went with socialism. Which they have every right to do. And we have no right to meddle, as we accuse russia of doing in our last election. What or who gives us such a right as this? Well, this right cannot be given, and so we do as all empires have done and give it to ourselves while forbidding any other nation from having our special right. Cause like the ordinary bully, we think we are so special that we deserve to bully, cause we are big and have more war tools. Just like all empires, we turn to the dark side, and fool our less astute people into believing we are good, when it is nothing short of satanic, and by its very nature, evil.

    While I defend the right of those people to have whatever kind of system they want, I also think their socialism should be left alone, and let any departure from it happen naturally even if it takes a long time for that to happen. Then the move away from it will be natural and created by suffering, and when a people suffer, this creates the best kind of learning.

    What hurts any change is our historical meddling in their nation. If we would just leave them alone and let them discover on their own, what works and what does not work, that would be the intelligent and moral thing to do. But when you meddle, as we have done for so long, it makes them stiffen their backs and if we want something, the reaction will be against what we want. As no one wants you to meddle in their family, and you will piss them off if you try, a nation is no different. What is acceptable or not acceptable at the micro level, like the family, is very similar at the macro level. We never seem to understand this. Or in our hegemonic arrogance just do not give a sh*t.

    You have left out some details. Maduro replaced the entire supreme court the day after the opposition party won majority in the national assembly. This was unconstitutional. He also enacted an unconstitutional emergency decree giving himself total legislative and executive power. That, along with his hand-picked supreme court makes him a dictator. As a final touch he has banned the major opposition parties from the up-coming election.

    Thank you!

    I've been wondering what happened to the overwhelming leftie support for Venezuela's descent into madness. They seem embarrassed by it now. Bernie Sanders won't respond to questions on it. Glad you've risen up to pledge your fealty all the way down.

    Authoritiarian, truly evil societies like North Korea and Venezuela which do not respect property rights shouuld be permitted to murder, starve, and steal from their citizens without interference.

    America should go back to non-interference.

    It's interesting that the people who parrot the anti-Chavista propaganda from the NYT and other corporate news outlet are silent about the violent opposition and one of the opposition leaders call for the US to overthrow the democratically elected government in Venezuela. And although Counterpunch is a left wing opinion site they have never advocated an illegal invasion of another country as the NYT has done repeatedly. And you get more relevant information in Jeffery St. Clair's Friday column, (not to mention some of the other columnists) than all the war propaganda from the NYT and WaPo put together.

    The socialist lovers like to skip over the bad parts in case you hadn't noticed.

    Just remember, everything is America's fault and you will understand their way of thinking.

    Venezuelans are fleeing in masses to Columbia.

    When your population is starving and leaving by the thousands, you'd think that would be a sign to the government that their plan for the country isn't working very well.

    You have to go back in history a very long time to play the United fruit industry card. It's really not a relevant factor today.

    lol....there's no place in my lifetime which has tried both socialism and capitalism until venezuela. in 1998 things weren't all grand and rosy, but people now are cooking their pets on grills because there's no food or electricity.

    There is no system that allows for the growth and redistribution of resources on such a massive sale other than Capitalism unless you have a tyrant in charge.

    It is like people who are pissed off about oil, well would you rather go back to before oil and use slaves for the power source?

    There is a contradiction in your post. If Maduro has given himself total legislative power, as you claim, then how did the legislature pass a bill absolving the opposition of all manner of crimes??? Try that fake news garbage on the naive Tea Party and not on me. I do not believe your propaganda.

    You don't believe Maduro brought in his illegal emergency measures? You need to inform yourself. I don't want to fight with an unarmed opponent.
