Despite improvement in vets' jobless rate, Iraq, Afghanistan vets still lag
March 20, 2014 ~ The problem will get worse if the Pentagon cuts the Army by 80,000 and reduces the Marines by 20,000, says the executive director of a group that funds nonprofit programs to help veterans find jobs.

No longer needed? Troops survive combat, then lose their jobs
March 5, 2014 ~ For thousands of career-military troops who endured combat and family separations during a dozen years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the end of hostilities brings a new directive from the government: your services are no longer needed.

We have so many people out of work that it is even harder for veterans to compete.

The only way this will ever turn around is for the government to get out of the way and permit private enterprise to grow and expand opportunities. That will never happen under the present administration. :wall:

    It's happened before.

Many WWI veterans found themselves out of work and unable to find employment during the great depression.

It is not a problem with or for veterans it is a national problem.

Both political parties blame each other and both try to spin the problem by claiming they are helping. Both parties pull the same stunts such as Obama is doing now. His administration publishes numbers showing LESS unemployment but of course they are not counting those who have given up looking for work and who have dropped off of the welfare roles. Republicans played the same numbers game in the past.

The best solution is less government control over the economy. At it's best Amercia built more and was more prosperous with minimal government interference.

Veterans as a whole have a better employment record than the population as a whole and they are considered lagging? George Orwell would be proud of this thread.

    Veterans’ unemployment defies simple answers
April 9, 2014 ~ A two-tour Army veteran of the Afghanistan war pulled on a pair of old combat boots and headed off to his $8-an-hour job washing cars at a Ford dealership in Wichita Falls, Texas. "My military background don't mean nothing," he said. "I am just another guy with a GED."

First lady announces one-stop job site for veterans
April 23, 2014 ~ To help veterans leaving the military as it downsizes, the government on Wednesday started a one-stop job-shopping website for them to create resumes, connect with employers and become part of a database for companies to mine.

My oldest son is going into the AF soon. He has sworn in and signed his enlistment papers and is waiting for his job choice to become available. We poured over all of the job choices with future employment in mind. I steered him into a career field related to mine and I'm hoping I can help him if/when he gets out. I think he will get his first choice of Space Systems Facilities Maintenance. PMEL or Avionics Component Repair would serve him well also.

The AF was the best thing I could have done for my career, once I dropped out of school. I finished my BS during my first term and have done well as a civilian. If any of you, or your children, go into the military, I highly encourage you to go for a job with lots of technical training. I think that translates into the best chance at a good civilian career. Most of my AF friends are doing OK. Most of them are retired and into their civilian careers already.

Veterans have a lower unemployment rate than non-Veterans. What more do people want-- a company car and 30 days a year vacation starting the day they are hired?
