Nothing to say. Nothing to do but wait.
The hours pass but does he know?
Is he suffering in his morphine haze?
No food for days now. Time is short.
    But it doesn't matter
All the goodbyes have been said
Word may come today, tomorrow, or the day after
Maybe he will last a week.
    But it doesn't matter
There is nothing to do but hope he isn't in pain
My baby brother will soon take his last breath
And there is nothing I can do about it.

I'm very sorry to hear this. Is it possible for you to be with him?

Thanks. :) He wants to be alone with his wife in these last hours.

It is a very sad and strange time.

He has cancer. His oldest friend died of cancer a few months ago.

Oh, I see. That's how it was when my MIL was near the end.

I'm glad you got a chance to say your goodbyes. I'm sure that meant a lot to both of you.

One thing that helped me was to make a list of all the good memories of my departed loved ones. I could just look at it on the days when the pain was unbearable. It helped me to remember the good times and how precious they were.

I found a couple of links that you might find helpful.

Our loved ones can never die if we hold their memories in our hearts.

P.S. If you ever need someone to listen, please feel free to pm me. ;-)

I'm very sorry for your impending loss. Siblings are unique parts of our lives and losing one means a loss of part of yourself. I wish you peace of mind as you wait for news, and then I wish you strength and the comfort of wonderful memories when the phone call comes. And may I say that you have a lovely talent with words.

    .

A friend was in hospice with terminal cancer.

Even though he was given powerful painkillers, he was alert and walking around until the end.

He and I talked over the phone and emailed everyday. His last email to me was right before he died.

I am truly sorry for your loss.

My older brother passed on September 23, 2020. My wife and I were with him for perhaps eight hours or more during his last day. Due to all the near death experience accounts that I have read over these past thirty years I suspected that he was in the out of the body state and was actually able to hear what my wife and I prayed..... and thought about him.

I am sure that he would be amazed by the way that my gifted Pentecostal wife prayed.....
Her first language is Spanish so she really did amazing prayers for him to choose to go with
Messiah Yeshua - Jesus in the afterlife as he would be viewing more than one dimension while he appeared to be in a coma in his palliative care bed.

We got the phone call about a half hour after we got home that he had passed on..... it was as if he had held on while we were with him and then he felt released to move on into higher invisible dimensions of space - time after we left.

My older brother's approach to life is one of the big reasons why I am such a rabid Universalist. Very few older brothers were as patient with their little brother's as Terry was with me.

Odd, I just found out that one of my best buddies from high school died exactly one year to the day before my brother passed.

A different friend, one of my best friends in life was my high school physics teacher. He died over a decade ago. We hit it off when I was in HS and eventually became great friends. He is the one who inspired me to pursue my degrees in physics. But he was much older than me. One day he when he was well into his 70s, he said the hardest thing about getting old is watching all of your friends and family pass. That is the price of a long life.
