The problem is our votes don't matter. The popular vote doesn't pick the President. Everone in America could vote for King Harald V of Norway and it wouldn't matter.

 

That sounds extremely tin foil. Of course it matters. We vote in the nominees and then vote for the electoral college that decides our President.

You don't think you're rather giving us too much credit? I mean, I'd love to be part of some sort of cabal running the world, but sadly that isn't the case.

 

Back in 'the day', us sheep had a leader. He was easily identified because he carried a staff and walked on two feet. We went where he guided us to go and did what he wanted us to do and if we strayed, he had an assistant (that looked vaguely like us, furry and walked on all four feet) that made sure we didn't wander too far from the herd. We had no choice as to who this leader was, he simply 'was'. Then we got the bright idea that we should 'elect' a leader chosen from the herd. One of our own. One that had our best interests at heart (because, after all, he was one of us. He understood us; our needs, our dreams, our fears) But soon, our chosen leaders learned to stand on two feet and tower above the herd. And the herd became less and less important and our appointed leaders deemed themselves more than representatives of the herd. They became elite in their own minds and their vanity affected the herd and the herd began to see them as elite as well.
But, this is what we wanted, and this is what we got. Now we grumble about our choices and we blame them for their actions. And even though we have the power to remove them from their lofty perch, we don't. We'd rather grumble and blame and point fingers. And after all, they are leaders and they are elite and they do stand on two feet, above us. And they have many assistants to be feared. So we'll just shut up, eat the plentiful grass and hope that this inadequate leader won't mess things up too much before a new inadequate leader is chosen.

If you're referring to "us sheep had a leader", then yeah, malarkey. There have been few "leaders". I agree. But good, bad or indifferent, Most appeared to have something resembling a backbone
