I see what you mean. When I say "downhill " I meant with respect to maintaining the teachings of Jesus. The Church itself thrived like never before - obtaining huge amounts of power after Constantine- but it was no longer the Church of Jesus - it was anti the church of Jesus - anti what Jesus stood for.

Consider this bit of divine Orwellianism. The Church that was persecuted - the Christian Church - became the Persecutors.

But - the strange thing is that they did not persecute those that had persecuted the Church .. In a bizarre twist of fate the Christian Church began to persecute Christians.

You were far better off being a Pagan -- then a "Heretic" - someone who rejected the Dogma Du Jour - real special treatment was reserved for Heretics.

What kind of twisted discombobulated Church - is a Church that ends up persecuting itself .. and these fellows were the most vile kind. The Papacy was a seat of power and so it was granted on the basis of power .. not much religious belief or Piety required in many instances ... but it made no difference .. it was nepotism central.. When one got in the first thing he did was make cardinals - appoint to high places - all his relatives.

When these folks were not killing and torturing Christians - they were raping nuns - mass orgies - and when not doing that sodomizing little boys.
