Here the New Republic dives into his role. I have read the actual Congressional record in the mid 1990s and when reading it learned the factual records of the civil rights law that Johnson so cleverly tried to take all credit for. I learned in the congressional records what truly happened and why.

I know for a fact that Johnson almost got stiff armed by the congress and that Everett Dirksen led the fight to the finish line. Humphrey also earns credit.
