Washington Announces Sanctions On Syrian Oil Industry
By Irina Slav - Sep 07, 2018, 9:30 AM CDT [IMG]

The U.S. Department of Treasury announced sanctions against five Syrian companies and four individuals on allegations of facilitating crude oil shipments and financing to the Assad government, Reuters reports, citing a statement by the department.

One of the targets of the sanctions are businessman Muhammad al-Qatirji and a trucking company he owns, that, the Treasury said, facilitated trade in fuels between the Syrian government and Islamic State, even though the government, with the assistance of Russia, is officially fighting this same Islamic State and most of it has been driven out of territories it occupied in Syria previously.

According to the Treasury statement, Al-Qatirji’s company was also involved in weapons shipments from Iraq to Syria.

Another target of the sanctions is a fuel trade network that spans Syria, the UAE, and Lebanon, securing fuel supplies to the war-torn country. One of the companies participating in this network, Abar Petroleum Service SAL, last year took part in the sale of fuels worth US $430 million to the Syrian government.

Two other companies in the network, “Lebanon-based Nasco Polymers and UAE-based Sonex Investments were designated for facilitating shipments to Syrian ports by serving as consignees and chartering the vessels,” the statement also said.

The Syrian army is currently preparing for an offensive against Idlib, the last major rebel stronghold controlled by groups involving radical Islamists recognized as terrorist groups by the international community.

The U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Supporters of the Syrian ...

U.S. Welcomes Saudi Contribution for Stabilization Efforts in Syria; ... Adnan Al-Ali, and Muhammad al-Qatirji, and Lebanese national Fadi Nasser. excerpt:

The sanctioned individuals are Syrian nationals Yasir ‘Abas, Adnan Al-Ali, and Muhammad al-Qatirji, and Lebanese national Fadi Nasser. The sanctioned entities are the AL-Qatirji Company, which is based in Syria, Nasco Polymers and Chemicals, which is based in Lebanon, Abar Petroleum Service SAL, which is based in Lebanon, International Pipeline Construction FZE, which is based in the United Arab Emirates, and Sonex Investments Ltd., which is based in the United Arab Emirates.

As a result of today’s announcement, all of these individuals’ and entities’ assets within U.S. jurisdiction are blocked, and U.S. individuals and entities are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with them.

Today’s action shows that the United States will continue to take concrete and forceful action to cut off material support to the Assad regime and its supporters.

The United States will continue to use all available mechanisms to isolate the Assad regime, a government which has systematically arrested, tortured, and murdered tens of thousands of Syrian civilians in response to their legitimate and nonviolent calls for their freedom, rights, and political reforms.

We have always been in conflict with Russia and Assad's real goal is just to stay in power and to subjugate his population.

Which is ISIS. ISIS also wants him gone. They are trying to establish their own colonies within Syria and they are getting pummeled by Syrian/Russian airstrikes

Iran is has been settling Shia from Iraq, Iran and Lebanon in Syria.. This is an ethnic cleansing.. Assad reduces the population problem and gets outside money to rebuild Syria.

Assad has been buying oil from ISIS.

and then, what? Sanctions only work for so long. What if Russia and Iran start opening buying/selling to keep his regime going?

Until Assad steps down or introduces reforms and fair elections. Lots of possibilities.

    Do you not understand this?

Assad isn't going anywhere unless he is forced out. Russians are backing him and they are meeting currently with Iran and Turkey to hammer out a deal in Syria.

Sanctions will hurt but he will remain in power.

I find it amazing that Margot is clueless about syria. But the saudis are wonderful people. Only in her delusions.

Isis was used as a proxy against assad. That is why it took russia entering in, by invite, in order to beat the bastards back. Unless you think the russian military on their budget is vastly superiour to the US military! ha ha

Isis and other radical groups need supply, logistics and financing. And assad was not providing that. Who was? ha ha Margot, your OPs, with your lead ins, never pass the smell test in regards to syria. They smell like old BS. And anyone who actually believes you, must really have a fetish for fecal matter.

I would prefer if we got out of the region. But if we are going to be there I prefer this to killing people.
