Pulling the gun from behind his back and raising it towards the officer?

This. This perfectly captures the issue I have with a lot of the authoritarian dialogue going on these days. Cop makes a mistake and murders someone? Victim's fault. Victim makes a mistake and gets murdered? Victim's fault. It is as if they can't bring themselves to question the irresponsible use of lethal force.

He was pulling it towards the officer, didn't you see that?

Set your fantasy version aside and watch the video. They have it from two angles and in slow motion. He NEVER raised the weapon toward the officer. HE WAS SETTING IT ON THE GROUND WHEN SHOT. Not sure if you have never shot a gun before, but you don't lean it against the ground to shoot it.

Unless the officer transported himself into the concrete where he was setting the gun down, then no, no one saw that.

Multiple times. That's why I know he was setting the gun down and your version is a desperate fantasy.

The video evidence doesn't support this assertion. Anyone can knock on the door and say "phoenix police" and then back out of view. The officer who shot should be charged with the death, most likely voluntary manslaughter, There was no threat and looks like the victim was complying, including kneeling to the ground to put the weapon down.

Phoenix PD is going to be paying a LOT of money to the victims family.

The man was CLEARLY "standing down". I didn't realize there were so many cop apologists. ;-(

Im of two minds here. Police have a difficult job. No doubt about it. But, when you think you're in jeopardy because the encounter is responding positively to your command set and you still shoot then, it's time for that cop to go. The department can't afford the actions of someone who just kills because they can, even if, in their minds, they were "protecting themselves, or their partner". At the same time, why don't the police understand how to deescalate with an armed citizen? it wasn't like there was a violent crime, or any threat of it? I'm not seeing why the interaction went down this way.

I suppose, but police have to understand that people will do stupid things and not shoot them for it. Still, police are just regular people who wish to live just like us.

It gets back to there being too many guns. Too many people are too heavily armed and the police are justifiably scared, as are most rational people

except the fellow does not point the gun at the cops. As soon as he recognizes that it is the police he goes to the ground in submissive compliance - and that is when he is shot.

I agree, even though I own a gun myself. I'm a senior woman living alone in an open carry state. I thought it might be prudent to have a gun and know how to use it. Just in case the fecal matter finally makes contact with the air circulation device.

Cops are not taught to deescalate. As a person on the wrong end of an abusive cop, some almost relish in making encounters worse. As a result of what happened to me, my two children are now terrified of police officers. I'm slowly working with them so they understand that not all cops are bad. It's heartbreaking to even have to have those conversations.

Cops, like doctors, can kill with almost 100% impunity and people like some of the posters here rationalize their criminal behavior. It is just recently that people have begun to get real help because they have photographic and video proof of police brutality.

I suppose you have evidence of your first assertion? I mean, like my anecdotal account, it isn't reflective or otherwise generalizable. In our community and surrounding area, local news run stories often explaining current police training which include things like de escalation. As I wrote, the folks who don't or won't get it, shouldn't be police in the first place.

Keep in mind that this kind of thing was almost never made public because loved ones of those killed couldn't get anybody to pay attention. Their complaints often feel on deaf ears. Fortunately, with the internet and ability to use one's phone to record encounters, more and more people are able to tell their stories.

it's still wrong, and I am against bad cops regardless if they are bad to whites or blacks - we all should be

I do agree though, this is not a black issues, it's an issue that affects all races

you can bet if ever other week you heard about black cops killing white people, people would be up in arms too - especially if every time it happened in the past the cops got off

I have always said... sadly, that owning a gun makes you more likely to be killed by a cop... as all they have to do is claim they "feared" for their life, and seeing a gun is all they need to claim that

guns are a double-edged sword, you have to weigh the risk\benefits

that said, I 100% support anyone owning a gun if they choose too

this case took almost 4 months to get the cop cams released

you can bet had the cop cam showed it was a justified shoot, the video would have been released in days, not months

but you're right, in the old days with no video, this would have been man pulls gun on police, man died - end of story

Moreover, gangsters can wear police uniforms. Therefore, before opening the doors at night, I would recommend calling 911 to find was sent a police patrol has been sent to your address.

But may be prudent depending on the neighborhood in which one resides.
