Watership Down is the name of a fantasy novel in the early 1970s.

Holey beef stroganoff and cheap vodka...

    Even Putin has gotten involved.

[IMG] Russia – On 22 November, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Argentine President Mauricio Macri, offering support. The equipment sent by the country includes special purpose ship Yantar and the unmanned underwater vehicle Pantera Plus

Well it's a maritime thing that landlubbers don't understand.

    Yup everyone wants to help.

This today essentially became a salvage operation.

But they need to find it first.

There is an underwater debris field somewhere down there.

When I chose my specialty in the USMC -- infantry -- with ARTY as my second choice -- I decided that I did not want to be a fly-boy (we call them zoomies) or a boat-driver (sailor).

I especially did not want to be an underwater idiot. Too dangerous.

    I just wanted an M-14.

Submarines aren't my department. Only crossed paths with a few who served on subs but had a sailing buddy who served 24 years on nuclear attack subs and eventually became the engineering officer on a nuclear attack sub before transferring to the Navy Reserves.

It was really weird that in 2006 he was called back to active duty and sent to the deserts in Iraq. But that's a different story.

First thing I asked knowing that the sub was diesel-electric, who built the sub ? Russian subs torpedoes have detonated in the past inside a sub.

But the sub was built by the Germans and the Germans build excellent submarines.

So what happened on the sub ?

Did a torpedo detonated while submerged ?

Being a diesel-electric submarine they have a bunch of really big batteries. Like really huge car type of batteries you have under the hood of your car. They are big.

I'm sure there will be a PBS special on this eventually.

Diesel boats are not safe. Never were. Never will be.

Yup I think that's what the Kelsey Grammer movie "Down Periscope" was based on.

    Great movie.

Could not stop laughing all through it.

    Subs give me the creeps.

Condolences to the families of those crew members. It's a bad way to go out.

Sad story. Being on subs is amazingly dangerous, even during peace time. Much like aircraft, if something goes wrong, the chances of surviving are just a roll of the dice.

Good riddance to Argentine military. Sayonara.
