Hell, why not. Letting pharma companies claim patents on taxpayer funded 'warp speed' injections is already been talked about.

My pump contains insulin, and only insulin. It's called life sustaining, I don't think I'll be taking a cocktail any time soon.

The only reason for panic is the fear mongering to get people to enrich the pharma companies the leaders own stock in.

Trump did it to buy time for scientific study. It was done and accomplished. Biden does it now for purely political reasons. We have identified the virus and all it's weaker variations. The vaccination was developed under Trump and all the hype in the world will not return us to those "early days".

Hard to know. There's like zero actual data to evaluate. And yet, even knowing that, folks like Fauci who claim to "be the science" while not actually knowing it, government is acting absent any real knowledge of the actual risk. There is lots of hyperbole so far. It will be interesting trying to figure out how the virus is violating lifecycle models by becoming more deadly and dangerous, unless it's being reengineered and reintroduced into the world.

Well, Joe, I may have an active imagination, and I've often found that when humanity reacts to something it often makes a bad thing worse. Nevertheless, my mind has never been quite so creative as to imagine that a virus as peculiar and extraordinary as COVID-19 simply sprang forth from an assorted population of bats, snakes, and pangolins... especially when there's a Mt. Everest-sized body of evidence (admittedly still anecdotal at this point) that the virus came out of that lab at Wuhan (not from the wilds of the Chinese 'hinterland'), through negligence and lack of due diligence!

Anyway, the good news is that a few experts here and abroad have said that this Omicron thing is nothing wet the bed over, and that's certainly good enough for stock market gamblers -- at this moment both the Dow and the NASDAQ are each up ~300 points and the S&P is up about 75. So, no big deal, and those of us who are fully-vaxxed and boostered can now go back to being as 'normal' as possible... I certainly intend to.

    Too soon to tell.

Its certainly not a bigger deal than our civil rights. No virus is. Rights are worth dying for.

You're only proving yourself right. The kind of wild speculation and exaggerated rhetoric you're spouting here is a major factor in the entire pandemic being as bad as it is.

The virus that causes COVID isn't extraordinary. It's called SARS-CoV-2 - the two should be a hint. Lots of human viruses are transmitted from animals, including things like Ebola you mentioned earlier. The only reason COVID is being so much of an issue is down to how infectious and easily transmitted it is.

Of course it is all hype. Biden and Harris both claimed that when Trump halted travel from South Africa it was done with racist intentions.....to stop black people from coming to the U.S. Well we have a far better handle on this Chinese infused virus now, so why is he doing it? Is it racist as he described? Might be, but I think he just wants to take any action that will drive the hysteria in our nation. It's about all he has left, that is, security seeking Americans giving him their approval.

Because 'Dr. Center', our worthy Forum member @CenterField says, in essence, that Omicron at present poses no significant risk, I'm content to stop being concerned about it, as I've already indicated.

How times flies! On Friday, Omicron was a screaming four-star RED ALERT, and now it's just so 'no-biggie'. And, as I also mentioned earlier, no one would agree more than the stock markets....

Hm... it's not exactly what I said. I did say that it is possible that this variant will be a problem. It's just that we don't know yet. For now, there are anecdotal reports of mild cases... but we shouldn't go by anecdotal cases. The full understanding of this variant's behavior is not yet in. We'll learn soon if it is more infectious (it does seem to be); whether or not it is more lethal, or less, or the same - some preliminary reports might suggest that it is less lethal but this hasn't been proven yet, and this will take a bit longer to determine, and whether or not it responds to the current vaccines is also not known, and will take a few more weeks to fully determine.

It is also possible that this variant will NOT be a problem, that it won't win the competition with Delta and will fizzle, but if it does become predominant, it might be less lethal, which would be a good thing.

But the bottom line is, we don't know yet.

Is there a potential for problem? Sure.
Do we know that it will be a problem? Not yet.
Could it even be a good thing? It could, if it predominantly causes mild cases.

So you think trump and biden were both wrong restricting travel from countries?
So gov't can control us? Again, makes no sense.

I think they didn't know exactly what was coming about so they did it to slow the spread as well as examine what routes to take. Wasn't that reasomable at the beginning of the China induced Pandemic?

I think Trump did it in the beginning to slow the spread. The cat now is out of the bag. Biden does it for control, just like he wears a mask when the camera is on.

@Pollycy this is an excellent article that explains the state of our knowledge (or lack thereof) regarding the Omicron variant; a highly recommended read (and not long):

    https://www.mdedge.com/internalmedi...ists-ask-whether-omicron-can-outrun-delta-how

One essential point is highlighted by one of the scientists: even more important than virulence (lethality) is whether or not this variant will be able to compete with Delta, and achieve a chunk of the proportion of cases, or replace Delta as the most prevalent one. Because it can be the scariest variant ever, but if it never spreads globally (remains local or contained) and never prevails over Delta, then it won't be a big deal, in epidemiological terms.

Remember Lambda? Never amounted to much. Beta wasn't that impressive either. So, we'll see.

Yes, it has the potential to cause trouble though, because it does share with Alpha and Delta, the two that actually spread globally, some of the same mutations, and more. But we don't know yet if it will.

most of the people dying are anti-vaxers, nothing more Biden could do to prevent that sadly

anyone dying from the virus without a vax, choose their path, not the President
