What do you think about superunmoderated forums?

Like most forums in late 1990s.

-- No registry required to post. You may use a screen name or Anonymous.
-- Moderators do not exist.
-- Disagree all you want. Advertise all you want.
-- Illegal threats are the responsibility of Law Enforcement.

 

Come to r/Libertarian on Reddit. You can post whatever you want. Avoid r/Conservative or anything left wing; they'll ban you at the drop of a hat.

 

Thanks alot. But these forums were really unmoderated -- no moderators existed and moderation was impossible. Even bots posted there.

 

There's got to be some moderation...

Law Enforcement can get them.

 

I earned my wings as Smartmouthwoman on Yahoo Message Boards. Unmoderated, as many profiles/IDs as you wanted. I could never pull off multiple IDs... but was very good at detecting frauds, esp men pretending to be women. Definitely no holds barred. And if somebody was reported enough times, their profile was locked. So they made another one.

That was a good forum. As I recall, each section had a relatively small limit on the number of threads started.

CCitizen 2000 (not my screen name there) was mostly a reader.

 

My first thread was in the Romance & Love, Romantic Advice subsection. Political sections were brutal. Remember the legendary JimtheHammer and of course, who could forget Foolardi.

 

My early experience on message boards was getting banned from a Comcast board...LOL

 

Definitely -- on many of the boards moderators did not exist. Thus, many people were locked in flame wars.

 

Facebook is an interesting place to discuss politics. No moderation, as such, but the fact you're posting under your real identity and your elderly Aunt Mattie, the lifelong Democrat, can read everything you post... promotes self-moderation. I rarely debate politics on FB, although there are lots of lively discussions if one wants to jump in.

 

I do not use Facebook at all. Sadly in USA many people are blacklisted for their political opinions.

 

They are more likely to show up on moderate forums where the users all think that someone else is paying attention to those things.

 

I'd never stay on such a forum, and I didn't back in the 1990s (early or late). Its just chaos, and the noise/signal ratio is primarily noise. Forums in the 1990s existed that were restrictive, and required registration. For the most part, they were the only ones worth bothering with.

 

Some moderation is necessary, as I don't think bots and spam contribute to a forum.

The most successful paradigm as a moderator is to engage the community with topics, instead of being a "forum cop".

IMHO, the only thing that should be moderated/censored/reported is actual criminal behavior.

Beyond that, you're just shooting yourself in the foot.

People who feel that their input must walk a certain line are not going to contribute to the forum via donations as they would otherwise.

 

Same. I use Facebook maybe a couple times a year to stay in contact with people who only use Facebook.

I got permanent banned from Democratic Underground just bevause I said that Communists and Russia were poopyheads.. You just cannot win.

 

I feel more comfortable with some moderation. Those without any are practically purposeless and you can get burned out easily with all the dung throwing around you. Its just too hard to find anyone civil and once you do, it all gets drowned out by the animals. Any idea that can be expressed without civility, can be expressed with civility. Slurs, insults, and trolling just distract.

Some Moderation is a must.

As long as a forum isn't "OverModerated", Moderation is a must to keep any place from being overrun by mean-spirited trolls.

Personally, in my experience at other forums, I have seen many levels of Moderation from"Uber-Nazi Admin" to the "Anything Goes Wild West".

I have a lot of respect for the way that the PF Mods keep a "lid on things" here.

 

I got banned from DU just for criticizing Israel's repression of Palestinians.

But I've also been banned from right wing sites such as Belief Net, Bible Forum, and others. They are so full of hate and refuse to see the truth when it is shoved in their faces.

 

I was part of this forum long ago tvat dealt with animation, it was fairly popular until the mods and frequent users got older. The forum was supermoderated as hell. You couldn’t use one cuss word, even one that was not technically a cuss word like “hell” and “damn.” Supermodersted forums are not my cup of tea.

 

I have never experienced this and never will....for good reason.
