He was a swimmer and took each man one by one and swam them underwater to the other side. He started out with 20 men and lost 13.
I have two uncles on my father side both WIA in Europe by German machine guns. Where as the Americans and British machine guns were used to support the rifleman laying down suppressive fire, it was the other way around with the Germans. It was the German rifleman who supported the German machine gun.
