Situation: I'm a retired male driver, over 60, residing in Colorado, with no traffic tickets in over four years. The only restriction on my driver's license is that I must wear glasses, and, with those I have 20-20 vision. I haven't been involved in any wrecks, and I have not made any claims at all for insurance payouts.

I have a small, 20-year old "extra" car that I drive less than 2,000 miles a year now, and the only thing I carry on it is the mandatory liability insurance, consistent with Colorado law, plus, the rider for "uninsured motorist".

Now, all of a sudden, my insurance company, Farmer's, is wanting to charge me OVER EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS A YEAR for this coverage on that car, and that's complete BULLSHIT!

If you were in my shoes, which insurance company would you switch to...? THANK YOU for your council!

USAA if you can qualify through military service. Great road side assistance and customer care. Little more expensive than some. Better break if you carry home and car insurance package.

Thank you for the reply, Daniel. I will check with them, but altho I'm honorably-discharged from the military, I did not make it a career, and I may not even be eligible to enroll with them. Plus, with this particular car, I just want to get by with as low a premium as possible. It is only a 'second' car that I use because of excellent gas mileage in the city.

Comparison shop for insurance, of any kind. Not sure of your special situation, but you need to look at other companies, and compare prices. I've had good luck with Geico.

Thank you very much for your advice! You make the third person who has suggested Geico, and I will definitely contact them, and State Farm, along with USAA.

Nobody has had anything good to say about Farmer's, the insurance company I have had for decades! They've always been good to me, but then, I have made very few claims over the years, for house, or my other vehicles -- and no claims at all on the one small car in question that only needs liability insurance because I drive it less than 2,000 miles a year, just to local stores in town, etc. Plus, I've got a really good driving record.

Our of all insurances I ever had Geico is the cheapest.
I also had to claim $11k of damages from hail back in May and they handled the case very well.

    To misquote Sheridan...
The best insurance company is a dead insurance company.

Did they say WHY they were increasing the rate so? Maybe it's due to insurance law changes and there's a "workaround" possible. Though a proper agent would tell you that if there was one.

Thank you very much for your opinion! So far a LOT of people have been recommending Geico, and, USAA. I was in the military at one point and so I can qualify with those folks. Lots of good input, though. We should all share our opinions about products and services more often!

I have received decent rates from both the Hartford and also Liberty Mutual get a quote from both just make sure they are only giving you the coverages required by law that you want.

Why not get a little more? The whole idea of insurance is "better safe than sorry". ( I'm with Geico and have always found them very easy to deal with, though I've never had to use them knock on megabits)

stay away from insurance companies that advertise on tv/radio, go to a broker and ask for a commercial/business ins company, many will cover individuals as well as businesses, better coverage, less red tape.

edit: as for those advert type companies, think of them as msi (mainstream insurance) similar m.o. to msm (main stream media), iow, untrustworthy

I've had Erie for decades, auto and homeowners. I've noticed premiums increasing as of late, even on the very basics. Don't know if they exist out there in Colorado.

I've had Geico for 3 or 4 years now. Have only had to use them once, but they were pretty good and made things fairly hassle free.

I have had the best luck using insurance brokers for both my business and personal insurance needs. They will use their contacts to get the best possible rate and a good one will shop for you at the end of your term. It’s best to change insurers often as they just add to your rates yearly — no loyalty program there.

    I currently use State Auto

Also, while you didn’t mention your policy limits make sure you have at least 100/300 and possibly an umbrella (just a recommendation)

    Good luck :)

Any one eligible for USAA and hasn't compared their rates to what you presently have is missing the boat.
