It is easy to forget, but people that decide to learn Japanese, either have a great passion for the Japanese people and culture or they have businesses in Japan.

Either way they will always practice the language.

Essere stato piduista vuol dire aver partecipato a un'organizzazione, a una setta segreta che tramava contro lo Stato, e questo è stato sancito dal Parlamento. Opinione che io condivido:)

I can read some of this --

It's the speakers opinion about participating in a secret organization that did something in/to the state and was sanctioned by the state Parliment?

Ah, he's speaking about P2 - that makes the topic clearer!

I can understand some Italian - I'm not fluent in it by any means, but I know some of the nouns and verbs, and can get a rough idea of what the speaker is saying.

For those who don't know Italian:

Piduista means "Member of the Masonic lodge P2".

Piduista?

The speaker never belonged to the P2 Lodge, s/he is a regular Mason. Something existed 6 years without a mandate from the Grand Lodge. Something 1976 caused. Private fraterntal organization something esoteric symbols. Correct?

The French Masons are something right now. The leadership is corrupt in the Grand Lodge. The Knights Templar in France something.

Rudimentary Italian - I need to work on it considerably!

Besides English, I speak French and studied German at University. I would like to learn Swedish, but there are just some sounds that I cannot do without hurting my mouth.

    Tack!

Nope. We are a fraternity coming from the Latin word "frater" meaning "Brotherhood".

P2 was a crappy and criminal imitation of the Masons. I have no doubt they were corrupt men who by their taking this name slander and defame the good name of Freemason.

If it wasn't for school I'd volunteer my time to go with the head of the Royal Arch Masons, International, to help settle the peace and re-establish a Grand Lodge over there.

My writing and reading is pretty good, but my speaking is not that great. In the two weeks I was in Italy I started getting the hang of it, but lost most of that skill as I wasn't able to use it much after that.

(*)(*)(*)(*)! I was going to make the same joke I made a year ago!

Actually I was going to say Klingon and the language of love. Or perhaps I can combine those two and learn the Klingon language of love.

I've been very slowly picking up Lao. The vocabulary and grammar are actually quite easy,, it's the toning that's very difficult.

The word "sii" can mean the number four, colour or the Lao word for fcuk,,depending how it's toned.

Any foreign language is difficult to learn, especially when one is an adult.

I'm very slowly learning Lao. Not formally but using as much of the language I know when with Lao people. I'm picking up the language very slowly. I'm at a point where I can string sentences together but I still need to think in English then mentally translate into Lao before I speak. Reading and writing is out of the question.

The vocabulary and gramma is very simple. Lao being a mono syllable and tonal language, the toning has me confused. I can be saying one thing, but mean something totally different.

I've been teaching myself Arabic on and off for couple of years. I like it even though I'm only slightly better than the tourist level.
I'd like to be translator one day.

Picked up a few words of Chinese and Russian courtesy of my business.

Do you find ways to immerse yourself in Arabic? I think that's terribly important for learning a foreign language - you've got to live it as much as possible.

Interesting that you're considering translation. I do that on a freelance basis with German. I'm also working on learning Russian and plan to translate it at some point as well. I've turned all of my interests into a way to practice it, too, with Russian books, music, videos/shows/films, and even computer games. I try to learn by doing, not just relying on lesson texts or audio programs. Those tend to be overly limited anyway, focusing on stupid stuff like travel dialogue..

Well I'd love too but unfortunately my means are rather limited at the moment and yes I do agree with you it is important to get a handle for the pronunciation. Arabic is a particularly sensitive language.

But that being said I'm going to Morocco later this year as part of a father-son trip so I'll get to see whether if I'm any good.
Well to a certain extent I do do that with films and especially games. Even if it's one or two words are spoken. I try and look it up.
I actually learned some of my first words of Russian from RTS games. And a little German from when I was dating super frauen in NZ. So Alles gut fur Ich am eine "Island Monkey" hehe

And yeah learning from the tourist handbook is really very basic.
I figured translation would combine my interest with a decent pay. I mean they don't call the mid-east the crossroads of civ for nothing, so everyone's wanting to do business there.
And besides my trade is good when it's good but won't last for long.

Hm, a good thing about the net is that your means are actually nigh infinite, and all for just one little monthly subscription fee :D Whether it's YouTubes in Arabic, an Arabic-language website or a copy of Linux freely downloaded and installed with Arabic set to the default & interface language, the net has all pretty much all you need. Heck, I imagine you could even find an Arabic-speaking young lady online if you look hard enough :p
