I dunno. Maybe there are others. Statues weren't big out West. They weren't even that big in the South until Jim Crow. He was a Virginian who fought for his country.

One on Washington DC. He may have been a Virginian who fought for his country, but to Virginia, he was a traitor who fought for the enemy.

Americans are screwy people. They're often slow getting started, but they only know one speed. All out. They weren't going to go for a deal with those people.

I don't see convincing evidence the Japanese were prepared to give up until they were crushed by the Russians in Manchuria and bombed by the U.S. They thought to avoid being occupied for the longest time.

Well, he died in San Francisco not long after the war, not the South where as you point out he was disliked.

I think the window for them keeping the emperor and simultaneously allowing an occupation is very short. They believed they could make invading their country so costly we would cut a deal. They should have studied our Civil War.

MacArthur convinced the allies that it would be easier to control the Japanese after surrender if the Japanese received their orders from the Emperor.

I don't think MacArthur made the call. Truman snapped his fingers when asked how long it took him to decide to drop the bomb.

I’m pretty sure MacArthur was the biggest advocate of keeping the Emperor Hirohito in power.

I think he was, too, but I don't think he made the call.

That was not one of the conditions that we offered to Japan in the Potsdam Proclamation.

We would have (although the Emperor needed to be subordinate to MacArthur). Unfortunately Japan was refusing to surrender before the atomic bombs were dropped.

Give those Yankee fellas a break, the yoke of the king had grown oppressive.

the sculpture still classifies as "art." and belongs in museums and libraries as such. the war between the states is a tragic era that effected many american families. its lessons must never be forgotten.

that said, to glorify the losers in this lost cause (shouldn't a general as great as lee's reputation have known the disaster he was calling onto his army?)

if the confederacy had had enough troops to win they could never have fed them.

How is it hypocritical? Seems to me they are both efforts against the cultural genocide practiced by the left.

(cultural genocide involves the eradication and destruction of cultural artifacts, such as books, artworks, and structures, as well as the suppression of cultural activities that do not conform to the destroyer's notion of what is appropriate.)

Some may belong in a museum, others held privately. Many were erected in prominent public spaces during Jim Crow to intimidate blacks and reinforce segregation.

They should be removed the same way they went up--legally. The decision on if, when and how belongs to the people responsible for maintaining them, mostly local government.
They have to be learned first.

How about Grant's memoirs on Lee's surrender at Appomattox?

"I felt like anything rather than rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause, though that cause was, I believe, one of the worst for which a people ever fought, and one for which there was the least excuse. I do not question, however, the sincerity of the great mass of those who were opposed to us."

If Sherman hadn't taken Atlanta, McClellan might have won the 1964 election and negotiated peace with the CSA.

Jefferson wasn't a traitor. Lee, Jackson and Davis were. I wouldn't spit on their graves.

NYC took down a statue of Jefferson because he was a slave owner. What should be done with it?

Well, I am glad to see that you are cool with monuments to racist, white supremacist slavers. What do you say to liberals who are not.

Win an election where you elect people who will do what you want.

The statue below is in Trier, Germany.
