I suspect the USA is transitioning from a well-intentioned nation, one with respect for tradition and history and government for all, to a severely divided nation with preference for a dictatorship run by an idiot. This did not happen overnight! This ignorance and righteousness and divisive mentality has been around forever...the only difference today is we elected a president who as Robert D Niro says 'is a piece of ****', who possesses the same righteousness and ignorance, and in becoming poster-boy, has signaled to millions of so-called Americans to show their true colors. Yep, that's why I hope to see the US agree to dissolve most of the Federal Government and operate instead as Independent States. First and foremost, the office of President has to go. This is no longer one nation. I won't live in the country they want. And I'm not leaving my home.
I've written many times that I believe HUMANS have basically and collectively reached their full potential. Today we are incapable of solving mid to complex issues, and worse yet, we are incapable of rational public discussion. We can no longer 'think' through complex issues to arrive at viable solutions that will advance all of society. No wonder to me why dictatorships can succeed...
Actually, I expect to see the West Coast become its own nation; with the sixth largest economy in the world. Other States may wish to join us. But the three Coastal States for sure. I sometimes wonder if the notion of the City-State is worth considering, for the largest cities. Cities and rural areas don't require the same laws and are generally dissimilar cultures.
At the core of it, we don't share the same values anymore. The day I saw a trump crowd cheering for mass murder and torture, I nearly threw up. I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. For the next two years, just the sight of a flag made me feel sick. It was like an Orwellian nightmare coming to life.

Although there can be some rationale for doing this, it's unlikely this will ever happen. However, when I think about another civil war, this time between the west coast and the red states, your idea seems more feasible. At a minimum I would like to see a stronger coalition of the three states to establish more power at the federal level...
