From the Menzies era to now, which government do you think has achieved more for Australia? Just an open ended question without no lead ins. Just interested to know perspectives and entertain a little bit of robust discussion! We haven’t had a bit of biffo on here for awhile. Who do ya think?

    Gillard by far !!!

Although she was only ruling with a minority government, Julia Gillard had the guts (and wisdom) to create a carbon pricing scheme (amongst some other things).
I sometimes think she has done more for our nation than all the male PMs before or after her, who turned (and still turn) a blind eye towards our environment, sustainability and climate change.
    Chapeau !!!

She was certainly the most successful PM ever when it came to passing legislation. Carbon pricing was scrapped by Abbott so not sure it could be counted as an achievement, well lasting one anyway.

I think this is far too subjective as first it has to be established what is better achievement.

I consider Rudd\Gillard\Rudd’s government to be possibly the worst Australia has ever seen BUT Gillard herself, well there is a legacy extremely hard to beat. Hawk and Keating achieved great deal yet so did Howard.

No, if you ask what politician or Prime Minister, then I don’t think we could go past Gillard. Very impressive personal achievements for the nation…

Yeah, it’ll obviously be a little subjective dependent on its impacts personally but more thinking policy that could be argued that has had a lasting and positive impact on Australia collectively.

Menzies: Creation of Liberal Party. ??? There is obviously a host of policy achievements from Menzies and ones we obviously take for granted today as we do with other governments.

Fraser’s achievements(well depending on your stance) included multiculturalism, Refugee policy, Administrative law reform: Commonwealth Ombudsman, freedom of information act et al.

Hawke and Keating floating the dollar, introducing universal health care, HECS fees and deregulating the banking system.

Howard: the GST & gun reform.

Rudd: Managing the GFC and NBN.

    Gillard: NDIS, NBN.

Abbott: Must have delivered something of significance. Scrapped carbon pricing, Threw out the MRRT. Changed optic to the premise to optic to the node(Being cheeky with these ones)

    Turnbull: Marriage equality

Morrison: Had a few things to contend with that took precedence...obviously. : )

The next big question is what they didn’t do!

    Reasonable enough.
And here is where I would consider most people are on this government. They were a strong government that tried to bring great deal of reform to Australia economically that could not be achieved without each other. Arguably the best economist of the day, Keating, also brought reform to the manufacturing industry which on his own had to abandon. Without the charisma of Hawk, Keating could not bring the party completely behind his vision… Shame, that we may have kept manufacturing in Australia not the tokenistic manufacturing sector Governments use today for political purposes.
Yeah, but paid down debt and pushed Australia further toward economic prosperity as well. We can agree was began by previous governments, May be not with the obstacles of the times.
Rudd, Your too generous. Australia’s resources sector clearly carried the GFC, Sure some policies made difference but some also killed people. AND the NBN, are you joking??? A plan on the back of a napkin??? I would give that to Gillard for actually starting to build the program…
Mental health programs, child abuse royal commission, and several other issues. I contend was done in a hostile party of disorganised allegiances that I would point to Shorten for the failure. Again HER legacy is much greater as politician than her government she led. The fact she got so much done of such importance, is something to be viewed with reverence, I do believe.
Actually I do consider the MRRT and the carbon tax scrapping as good things, AS these policies pushed greater pressure on the poor of the nation and promoted increase in the poverty line while OTHERS sat riding high on the benefits of government subsidies. BUT I don’t consider, stopping policy that makes to lower class pay for the indulgences of the rich great. I call it the decent thing to do.
Turnbull, I think your being generous, Morrison, well not looking to good at the moment.

I would consider the banking (YEAH, I was against because it told us nothing new), elderly Royal commissions, might be something but clearly with policy that goes against both commissions being introduced just recently…

Well, seems 'what they didn’t do' is just the tip of the iceberg at the moment.

So, as you can see, I don't think you can go past Gillard herself, NOT her government.

Even though I detest the little rodent you have to give some Kudos to Howard for gun reform.

Mind you if I ever want to see a gun nut have an asthma attack I tell them Howard was deeply conservative :p

I vote Harold Holt. One day he walked out into the ocean and was never seen again, that's more than I can say for the rest of this mob.

    PLEASE

Which of the above advocated Australian economic self sufficiency and let China buy any surplus.
    Or Japan. Or whoever!

Charging Aussies more because too much was
sold to Japan is absurd! Ref.: Nat Gas
Australia needs to adopt self sufficiency.
Adopt Grand Projects as Mulholland did for LA
Solar Desalination and power to pipe the water.

    New agricultural land.
Create GREAT INTERIOR LAKES and the benefits of
such an ecosystem in the middle of the Never Never.

Become a world leader in solar this & that.

    Or just be, Australia.
    A reference point of geography

    Moi :oldman:

    Support Aussie nationalism
    no apologies!

    Become a world leader?
    In what?
We already dig the biggest holes, we still mine coal despite the global trend against fossil fuel as global warming shows its effects.
Our politician scare us citizens with covid covid covid, China has been declared our enemy, and basically life is not worth while.
We had been a positive nation, the lucky one, but we have allowed our politician to take control over our minds.
World leading would look different to me, at least in a positive sense. Yep, no apologies, action needed!
    Enjoy your Sunday,

That is why any liberal or national government is holding on to gas and coal.
600m planned for a new gas powerplant.
Sorry mate, I am a realist...

The governments that did the most for Australia are the ones that didn't have their hand deep inside of China's and the Deep States' pockets.
