'White Awake' group draws backlash at University of Maryland

    Because no one is defending them and pretending they were good guys.

    Actually, we don't.

    There are a few bitter-enders and nostalgists but most Southerners have no use or sympathy for the Confederacy and the "peculiar institution" it fought to defend.

    Of course, they did.

    The battles that started the American Revolution at Lexington and Concord were about two things:

    1) The weapons stored at the Colonial armory

    2) Arresting Samuel Adams and John Hancock for treason

    Had the Lobersterbacks stationed in Boston caught up to those two they would have been dragged back to London in chains and then hanged.

    According to this poll a majority of white southerners see the Confederate flag as a symbol of pride while a overwhelmingly majority of minorities obviously see it as the symbol of racism and hate that it is.
