Who in this membership would you suggest as a good candidate for a moderator?

We look at many factors but especially someone who debates civilly, is dedicated and is liked by many of you?

I am doing this for fun and would like feedback. Someone started a thread like this some time ago so please keep it light hearted and your honest opinion, okay?

    Thanks members,

    Jiyuu:wink:

I think Okgrannie would make a great moderator, she is on regularly, she is already a PF Advisor and she frequents the welcome forum too to welcome new users.

I'd say Shiva TD as well but he's already retired his modding days!

Sorry, I think Okgrannie is way too partial. I don't see her being a good fit for that job. She's been on my ignore list for over a year now.

I think Serfin' USA and Bow to the Robots would both be great. They're very level-headed, rational, and respectful of everyone. Assuming either of them would be interested.

I think Unifier would make a great moderator. Bow To The Robots is an interesting poster to read on occasion but he's little too snarky, he made a thinly veiled PA toward me today. Steady Pie might make a good moderater, he's pretty cool-headed. Maybe Paisthea, or Taxcutter, Stuart Wolfe, or DonGlock26

Awesome picks. I will take note of your selections too.

Mak and I were thinking of asking you members who you see as members who are decent debaters, civil, and well liked.

Of course most members don't start our as moderators but you never know!!!

How about you? Is that something you would want to entertain in the future?

Johnny-C, leftysergeant, and SFJeff get too emotional and take topics too personal, and wouldn't be the best picks for moderators.

I don't know who Neodoxy is. I haven't payed much attention to Liberalis - but if his name has "liberal" in it then I'm thinking that'd make him seem too impartial.

Actually, that's true. I hadn't thought about that. Bow does have a bit of snark in him. I guess I just figured he might be able to control that if put into a position of power. *shrug*

And good call on Pasithea. She'd be good too.

I actually need to read more of Steady Pie. He seems to be one of those people that contributes interesting things to threads, but I haven't read enough of his posts to form a solid opinion on him yet.

Some great suggestions coming in guys - if I am honest, we ourselves have seriously considered most of the people you mention, and will likely take a second look at them all based on your approval, and nominations.

For me the mark of a good Moderator (potential Mod), is fairness and objectivity, demonstrated consistently. Not so much their debate skill. One could effectively debate that birds fly upside down, but unless, when presented with an factual opposing opinion, they are willing to listen and even concede to a factual point, then their skill as a good debater really doesn't mean so much (to me, at least).

Fairness and objectivity are key. And honestly, (in overall terms, across the board/members) I don't see that as often here as I had hoped, or would like. I understand being passionate about an issue, however if one is unwavering, how can there be compromise?

Fairness is ability to compromise, the ability to measure your response to others, and the ability to admit when you are wrong. There is absolutely no shame in being incorrect, so long as one is able and willing to accept it, and move on. Unfortunately, many otherwise great people, lack the ability to do that. Perhaps it's pride, I don't know, I don't understand it.

Fairness and the ability to be objective, may not win someone a popularity contest, but it is always the best course.

...nothing wrong with having a sense of humor either. Walking around with a stick up your butt 24/7, not only makes you look like a jerk, it's not good for your mental wellbeing. lol

I chose who I did because their interest in discussion/debate (disagreements and presenting their own opinions) comes across as genuine to me and because they seem like people who would be interested in protecting the integrity of a discussion as well as the discussion/debate space in general.

To me at least...picking a well suited Mod usually entails finding someone with the ability to avoid confrontation personally, and accept they will lose much of the fun factor of this site. Generally, once one takes on the role of Moderator, they must become far more involved in areas they do not frequent, become a bit less pleasant at times, devote hours to reading carefully, and often feeling bad about required actions.
As I have not spent enough time here to evaluate individuals closely, no one comes to mind immediately that would fit the bill.....but I recommend those who add to the list consider these criteria.

Great post, most of what you say is true. There are plenty of folks here that would handle it fine though, you would be surprised. You do miss some of the old fun, but some members get tired of posting, so the position is different and challenging.

There are many everywhere that will turn out as excellent additions....I'm just stating one need be careful.

Forums have died because of poor decisions noted in hindsight.

I really like Johnny-C as a person. I think he's probably a really good guy deep down. Which is why I find it unfortunate that most of our interactions on here don't usually go too well. But I chalk a lot of that up to the fact that he tends to get emotional at times when feeling backed into a corner on an issue, and it prevents the discussion from going any further. This would be my only concern with him as a mod. I think his moral integrity is sound, but he has a tendency to think with his feelings a little too much. Which might result in some unintentional skewing of authority.

SFJEFF isn't a bad guy. I don't dislike him. But he's a little too bull-headed for his own good. Sometimes he will be very clearly wrong about something and still be too stubborn to admit it. I don't know that this bodes well for even-handed moderating.

And leftysergeant is just a lost cause. I've had quite a few interactions with this guy recently where I often wonder what he's even talking about because he's so far off in left field (no pun intended). I think it's important to have a basic grasp on reality in order to be trusted in a position of authority. And I'm not sure he's cut out for that.

Like Cricket, I'm not familiar with Neodoxy either. So I can't comment there. Perhaps I'll go read some posts to get an idea.

For the Mods reading this: I can think of a couple of other people who would have made great additions, but they don't really post here anymore. People like Zosiasmom and Trinnity. They were both excellent.

I think if this were an official election and I had to vote for only one candidate, Serf would probably get my vote.

Damn, I forgot about him. He definitely gets my vote as well. I like that guy a lot. I think he'd do a pretty good job of being fair and impartial.
