A magazine fed .22 rifle was my first weapon.

I was taught to shoot at 14 but there was never a need to own a gun at that age...as an adult I had two a semi-auto .22 and a 12 guage....but there was never really a need to hunt so when I became a dad I didn't them around my kids .... I dismantled them, smashed the parts with a sledge hammer and in threw them in the garbage...

yeah I probably should have taken them to the police as was required back then...I didn't see the point, I wasn't selling them on because of the legal requirements for re-selling in Canada and destroying them is exactly what the police would have done with them anyway... I was very thorough in my destruction...

I did not have any firearms at home as a young lad, at age 10, I learned that firearms were a necessity to defend oneself, for hunting, target shooting, my Uncles were Hunters and had Military service.

My Dad was in Military service however, was Anti-Gun
Thanks to Mom that was very much Ant-Gun though she related family stories of positive gun use.

I personally changed my opinion one summer at a cottage we stayed at every other year, it was inexpensive and in a small town near Woodstock, lots of small shops and very nice.

One day, at the pool, a Sheriff's patrol car crossed the bridge onto the property, and Deputies asked if we hadn't any guns, we responded in the negative, and were warned to be wary as three dangerous convicts had escaped, Murderers, desperate men that would stick at nothing and should be shot on sight, they showed us pictures of the Men, ugly Men, it made be shudder, ugh.

It made me think how splendid Uncles pump shotgun hidden under a towel would be just then.

Before leaving, we were warned to Arm ourselves if possible.

This incident and a book on gun control changed my mind on firearms and handguns for defensive purposes.

The next summer I visited My wealthy Uncles Estate in another Country, one with strict gun controls, his Estate had vast Ingenios or Sugar plantations with doves, quail, pigeons, Guinea hens, and occasionally, Pheasant that he tried to raise and tame, and always escaped into the Plantations and hills.

He had a nice collection of Spanish made shotguns and I gravitated to one that fit me best, a 20 gage double that balanced well for me, it had been Grandfathers.

I took many fowl with that shotgun in my younger years age 10 and in my later teens, Mother never interfered but never approved either as her brothers were avid Hunters.

Uncle always insisted I take along Grandfathers old service revolver, in its flap holster and extremely accurate in case any wild mongrels appeared, as they killed many stray calves.

Those were great summers, shooting tin cans with a .22 and fishing, cooking in the afternoon breeze under a tree.

gun safety, the law required any buyers need a permit/back ground check and I didn't want to bother with sorting through the potential criminals without permits coming to my home(and knowing where I lived)....
    they weren't collectable...
they won't be missed and won't be misused or stolen because they're gone for good...

I wouldn't mind owning a vintage/collectable sniper rifle purely for target shooting but I don't the time for another hobby...

I have never had a gun. Would never have one in the house or anywhere near me. I remember back in high school, boys having hunting rifles on a rack behind the seat of their pickups. But that was a different time, a very different time. No one ever thought of taking it into the school and shooting anyone. We did have a gun death though. Two juniors were goofing off with a gun at one of their houses. They were best friends, boys. One killed the other accidently. He was charged with manslaughter and spent some time in prison.

Years ago as a civilian I owned Browning .22 automatic rifle, Ithica 12 ga. pump shotgun, .270 Manlicher Schoenaur and Winchester 30-30 model 94. As a cop/civilian, .38 colt revolver, S&W 30 cal Chief Special. 32 cal Walther PPK, 38 Colt Gold Cup. I presently own and often carry a Ruger .380 LCP.

At age 10, as much as I enjoyed "horsing around" and wrestling with other boys, I knew guns were not to be played with, even cap pistols were not something I gravitated to, I liked so called Cowboy guns (revolvers) and the holsters and belts were interesting to try on,
At one point, My Cousin had a complete setup with two guns ( inert and non firing) that you could load with dummy rounds, and had noisey smoke making caps you loaded into the fake rounds.

Sort of like a fast draw setup, with no possibility of loading real ammo.

I remember putting it all on, and wearing a Cowboy hat standing in front of a mirror looking all Cowboy, and Mother walks by and sees Me, looks very disappointed, shakes her head sadly and walked off.
    Very embarrassing.
    The guns were still interesting.

What are you on about now ?

When I was a lad of 9 or 10, I liked kissing and that is frowned upon now, then it was called "puppy love" and no big woof.

I liked my hair long until I was warned, it must needs be cut.

My fweedumb at age 10 as you put it, was My long blond hair hanging in bangs over my blue eyes, a comfy shirt and comfy corduroy pants and loose sneakers, and that handsome neighbor girl trying to kiss me.
