    If someone pulls a gun during a robbery, they're declaring that the property is worth more than your life to them.

    True. But, assuming the criminal already has his gun in hand, as the clerk you're betting his blood isn't up because he definitely has the drop on you. If he came in wearing a mask, chances are better that you'll live through compliance than defiance in my opinion, though I admit I've never seen a study on this.
