No licenses or permits of any sort are required here in Texas to own a gun... but you have to show proof of being at least 18 to buy a long gun and 21 to buy a handgun. That works for me.

 

I agree. I think everyone should be entitled to the tools necessary for self defense. However I do think violent criminals should not have them. That’s my only okay as far as restrictions

Age is irrelevant. What's relevant is state of mind, meaning maturity.

When someone reaches a certain age, there's no magic wand that automatically makes them mature and responsible. That is something that is learned.

There's no reason why a 10-year old who is trained in fire-arm safety and acts responsibly cannot wield a rifle or shotgun for hunting or sporting purposes. I don't see a demonstrated need for them to use a hand-gun.
