"Who's gonna pay for Medicare for all?" is either stupid or disingenuous

which is the problem in Canada, not enough MDs....what preventing it is politicians/taxpayers, more MDs would require more spaces in schools and hospitals for training, and that requires money/taxes...politicians hate telling voters they need to pay more taxes to address the MD shortage because they would loose their jobs, the population is it's own worst enemy if they want better service they need to step up and pay for it...

Yep, it is private organization that has no interest in free market, it is actually monopoly (a part of Medical Cartel).
The number of doctor's licenses equal to the number of medical residencies that congress approves.

U.S. Congress only cares about Medicare and Medicaid patients ignoring other people's needs.
That is how shortage is created, and that is why universal health care coverage is required.
Otherwise all people in US compete for the resources allocated only for the recipients of Medicare and Medicaid.

But private care is not an alternative for the poor, or they would not be going DIY with pliers, whisky and glue.

To provide good comprehensive care and follow up through government care will require much more money.

Vested healthcare accounts for workers could take care of much of the problem, but the initial cost would also be very high, and the political class would be very opposed to any approach that cut the bureaucracy and empowered individuals to look after themselves.

Because Medical Cartel is also have influence in Canada. I believe Canadian doctors can work in US and vice versa. That tells me that artificial shortage of doctors is implemented also in Canada, otherwise we would have an influx of doctors from Canada. I think Canadian government is doing same thing as US government, they allow medical license to be issued only if government allocates money for medical residency (effectively limiting number of doctors).

greed, (I ain't helping those poor scum)...they think their safe until they get hit by a major illness and have their insurance coverage wiped out, a severe long term illness can even reduce millionaires to poverty...I don't have those worries with universal healthcare and neither do our millionaires.

COBRA provides coverage for those in between situations.... coverage is available, no one said it had to be cheap. If one makes insurance (please insert my standard statement regarding insurance) affordable for a specific group of people, someone else is paying more than they should. That's why mandatory insurance is NOT the method to continue with.

If you bothered reading the things I have posted on the subject, then you wouldn't have made that statement, but by doing so, it makes it clear you have nothing to constructive to add.

You absolutely can. Both Medicaid and Medicare are socialized medicine. Both of those systems deny coverages at a much higher rate than the private system. They do so by setting rates so low that no one will do them.

ObamaCare is predatory because it forces people to buy mandated coverages they don’t need to subsidize others. How is that fair ??

You really believe that a socialized medicine system will result in more physicians making less money ?? What happens to medical malpractice recourse in socialized medicine ??

The simple fact is if you don't have insurance when the big enchilada happens you will become a moocher on the rest of society. Just sign a pledge to die rather than accept others paying for your healthcare and we will take you seriously.

My wife is an executive administrator in a Medical research facility and I have a number of MD friends...Canadian MDs have an easier time going to the US than US MDs do coming here...Canadian medical schools are very uniform, quality is consistent, requirements to practice are higher, US schools are not as consistent most are of the very best quality but some US med schools are questionable so US MDs are scrutinized carefully when they come here...graduates of AUC American University of the Caribbean, good luck trying to practice in Canada

the shortage is all due to funding, to have more MDs we need more hospitals, more MD teachers, we have a surplus of med students but limited space to train them, so only the very best are accepted but not all that are eligible...hospitals at an average of one billion each aren't high on politicians list ....one of MD friends a Neurologist gets annoyed when people claim MDs are deliberately limiting new MD numbers, as he told me "I'm over worked now, if I lost half of my patients I'd still have too many"...

another MD friend a cardiologist trained at John Hopkins, left as soon as he could and returned to Canada...he's wealthy and could be wealthier if practiced in the US but has no inclination to do so, money isn't everything in life...I think most MDs just prefer to work in their own countries

I know enough about it to know that it fails every time its tried. Do you misunderstand it enough to think that it can work?

    The shortage exists naturally anyway.

All surgeons are doctors, but not all doctors are surgeons, nor could they be.

There is a natural limit in any population for the number of people with the requisite skills and abilities to become a doctor.

Of the tiny percentage of that population, not everyone with the requisite skills and abilities wants to be a doctor, which reduces the number further.

Doctors can only be trained by other doctors, and of the tiny percentage of the population that has the requisite skills and abilities to be a doctor and actually wants to be a doctor, an even tinier percentage has the requisite skills and abilities to also teach.

And of that tiny faction of people who have the skills and abilities and want to be doctors and who also have the requisite skills and ability to teach, not all of them want to teach.

The number of doctors who are willing to teach is very small.

When I taught Intro to International Relations, there were 80-100 students in class. That is appropriate, but it is not appropriate for a teaching doctor to have 80-100 students.

For one thing, 80-100 students cannot fit into a patient's room at the hospital.

So, teaching doctors only teach 8-12 students at a time, which is appropriate given the complexity and level of instruction.

Expanding residency is not going to pan out as you dream it will, because if you cannot find doctors to teach them, then only thing you will do is create a shortage of teaching doctors.

How does a medical school get around shortages?

Offering higher salaries to teaching doctors.

Congratulations are in order...you just increased the cost of healthcare...and you still haven't resolved the problem of a shortage of teaching doctors, you just passed the problem onto patients.

The last thing you want is mediocre doctors. You already have enough of them to go around.

    very good summation

I'd just add Mds that I know are already over worked just offering more money to teach doesn't always work...as they tell me they just don't have the time teach as there's only so many hours in a day...

They've already disparaged doctors and their worth in the course of debate. They will define what is "enough" for doctors.

    That is incorrect.
Residencies can and do employ residents out of department money. They are cheep labor.
