I saw him in Chicago at Orchestral Hall in the Early 80's.
    Absolutely Incredible!

I listened to one of his recitals in the Portland Auditorium in 1962. He was a true master of classical guitar. Glad you enjoyed his performance.

Subsequent generations of guitarists have criticized Segovia, but they fail to appreciate that there was comparative little literature and no modern pedagogy for guitar when he was starting his career. He was largely self taught and from an earlier generation, so OF COURSE he sounded and looked a little stiff. I put Tarrega and Barrios way ahead of him in terms of pioneering literature, and of course Segovia composed next to nothing, but he inspired and paved the way for Julian Bream, John Williams and Christopher Parkening, among others, and was still great. He spent many, many hours studying and practicing in solitude with no one to share the pain or to cheer him on.

They also failed to appreciate the passion with which he played. He wasn't a composer. He was a performing artist of the highest degree. I appreciate the three you mention and have recordings by all of them but I rank them behind Segovia.

Oh, I do as well. That wasn't my point at all. My point was that he essentially trained them, if via example and master class. Parkening I don't care for at all.

Now, I do put a couple of players of the next generation, specifically Manuel Barrueco, ahead of Segovia and those three. And there is another Cuban of the millennial generation, I think it would be, who surpasses them all, named Ali Arango.

But all this is normal, giants standing on the shoulders of giants. The Italian Oscar Gighlia for some reason never achieved the popular renown that he deserves.

I'm not familiar with Arango but his family name is very familiar to me. There were several Arangos married into our family in Cuba. My uncle in Oriente province was one who was married to an Arango woman. I'll check him out.

What is it about Cuba that produces such artistry? The Buena Vista Social Club, Leo Brouwer, Manuel Barrueco and Ali Arango have all seen affected me ... and that's just in contemporary music. I have to believe Cuba has produced a disproportionate share of painters, dancers, and sculptors as well.

There are at least three young classical guitarists that surpass Segovia, Bream, Williams, and Parkening. They were great, but the young always stand on the shoulder of the old.

    Ali Arango

    Ana Vidovic

    Antoine Boyer

I'm sure there are more, but check any recording of any of those three.

Working a show a few years ago and VR was headlining the hard rock stage. They had requested on the rider that a blender be in their dressing trailer so a woman on the board said she had one and she'd just bring that one.
After everything had shut down got a call on the radio for everyone to come back to that trailer. So rode back there and the woman held up her blender and one of the guys in VR had taken a crap in it. Really, not like they are twenty year old's out on the road for the first time..........Anyway she dumped it before I could scream for her to stop. I was going to get a can of that spar urethane we could have poured into it, let it set and then we could have sold it as "Certified Slash S***" on Ebay!

Depends on the genre, but most versatile and favorite is Terry Kath.

I like Ernie Isley, Teenie Hodges, Steve Cropper, Jerome Smith, Steve Hackett, Nile Rodgers, George Benson and Alex Lifeson.

I've always liked Tim Reynolds, especially his acoustic work with Dave Matthews. --- Warren Hayes does good work as well.

I also like a number of classic rock guitarists (Richie Sambora, Jimmy Page, Angus Young, Joe Perry, etc...)

Amen to that, and you just gave me an excuse to play my favorite Pantera video (shot in Moscow right after the fall of the USSR) - Dime's solo at 3:00 is great, as usual...

    Bonus Dimebag:

Personally I'm partial to John McLaughlin in the jazz guitar scene.

Billy Cobham on drums and McLaughlin on guitar is unlike anything else:

Saw them live in 2011 when I was barely 18. One of the best gigs I've been to, Chris Squire is underrated AF on bass.

Different genre, but I really like the stuff McLaughlin did with Paco De Lucia and Al Di Meola:

Imo it's a real bloody shame he wasn't born 30 years before he was.
