Funny that my main reason joining here was to save my Facebook Trump friends from having to read any more of my complaints about him. And yet now that I'm here, I am reluctant to engage in this polarized mosh pit of perspectives about right and left, Democrat and Republican, Conservative and Liberal. This is an interesting site. I'm surprised to see it has been around for so long. I may decide to stick around and maybe even donate a couple of bucks. Being a newb here I've tried to find some interesting topics to post on and I don't think I've made more than one or two users notch me into their flame-on-sight category. It sure does take a long time to read an entire thread, doesn't it? Curious how many new folks like me are trying to get a feel for the folks in this place by reading entire threads? I just finished an entire thread over in Firearms and Hunting where the thing that now sticks in my mind is a couple of guys with backgrounds in the alarm system business having at it. Lots of retired folks on here it seems like. I'm kinda surprised at myself being such a newb here that I've decided to put half a dozen folks on Iggy already. That dude lamenting about his lack of money to buy a yacht, for example.... Ultimately though, I guess I'm here to have conversations with people: what's your motive?
I'm here to find sanity in the forest of insane and crazy partisans on both sides who play the "my team always good their team always bad," card in every single thread. Some people can't even decide if the FLOTUS is pretty until they know which letter is in parenthesis next to her name. These are the majority of the posters, but most of the country is partisan as well/ approximately 25-30% on each side. There are plenty of people around here who do not need the talking points memo to decide if they like/dislike/agree/disagree with someone/something, etc. Some people are so predictable that there's no reason to bother reading their posts. They just come in to say "Orange man bad," or "all democrats bad," and similar thought provoking insights. Welcome - it's easy to find the sane versus insane. I know I'm doing it right. I get accused of being a loony lefty and a right wing nut job, sometimes in the same day.
I use this site for entertainment and to read opinion that might change mine....basically to learn and get a mental workout. As of late however I have done so elsewhere for the most part to avoid infraction.
I am here mostly to avoid loneliness. Twitter, Facebook, YouTube are Political Battlegrounds. This is a tiny and relatively safe place on Social Media.
I am an independent voter. Been one since '96. I keep looking for like minded people that understand both political parties don't give a darn about the country or the people. They are just trying to reap as many benefits as they can before they go to work for some rich firm as a lobbyist.
Same. Not only do most people I know seem to get uncomfortable with disagreement, but also Im particularly terrible at face-to-face debate. I'm slow and lacking of wit. I can represent my views precisely and rebut effectively only when given time to ponder how to word my thoughts. I also have an auditory processing dissorder. I can comprehend text faster than speech.
I'm here for numerous reasons, conversations, debates, the news and opinions people bring to this site and to observe and learn. Most of all, I'm here for the bright, interesting and passionate people here and from what little interaction we've had you appear to be another one of them, Grey Matter. Hopefully, you will decide to stick around for a while and welcome aboard.
It's kinda weird but there is a sense of community here. I'd not likely help some random leftist who needed help. But if someone here say. Imnotoliver needed help and i was in a position to help him i would.. I disageee with him on nearly everything but because of interactions here i guess that makes him my leftist..
I'm a caretaker of my above knee, amputee, stroke survivor other half. So I spend 95% of my time at home. She requires help to get up and move from a to b. Stroke robbed her of her ability to safely transfer. So needless to say, I have lots of free time. I too, like to argue and find news here.
I don't like to argue, per se. I enjoy discussion with people who are smart and have a different way to look at things. I like to be challenged. I like to have my world view be in touch with reality, so I always make adjustments as new information comes in. What I cannot tolerate is partisan hacks on both sides. They drive me insane with their "but Obama," "but Trump," "but Hillary..." and that could be if we are discussing favorite foods. I like to talk to people who aren't married to an idea, just because that's comfortable. I like trying to understand both sides. It's important. If you stop learning, just die.
