Why do Americans value the ability to own a gun so much?

I have just realized that guns are prohibited in many countries in the world.
I understand not ALL Americans believe they should be able to own guns, but why do so many still believe they need them after seeing/hearing/reading about all these problems they cause?
Is the 2nd amendment so vital for our society?
I am ready for any answers.

Well to understand that, you have to understand American history.

We value freedom and liberty here, and you can not ahve that if you don't have a means to protect yourself.

The only reason to take away firearms is to live in a tyrannical government.

And most countries and people around the world do not understand the concept of inalienable rights.

This is the only answer to the question, why do "Americans" love guns?

If someone breaks into your house, would you rather have a baseball bat or a gun to defend yourself with?

I can't figure out why so many people are interested in whether I should own a gun or not. It seems a simple basic right to me. There is an assault rifle in almost every home in Switzerland, so maybe busybodies need to go stare at that country for a while.

Only to those who don't value the constitution and constitutional rights and want to set up a tyranny.

You can ridicule it all you want, but that's just leftist anti firearm asinine nonsense.

Oh, and Mi9chael Moore is a lair and makes a lot of lies in his "documentaries". More like mockumentaries to me.

So if you value him and his lies then that tells me the kind of person you really are, and that i should just emphatically dismiss anything you have to say.

let me ask you this. If three men enter your home and begin raping your wife, do you prefer me making the decision for you on how best to protect your wife from these attackers (I decide that you use begging and pleading as opposed to a gun) OR would you prefer you decide yourself whether or not a gun is the best idea for you and your wifes protection?
Guns save lives too. You never hear those stories though do you? A smart person would ask why that is.

I live in hurricane country. In a matter of days, I could be in a situation without power and ability to communicate. A gun is a necessity, IMHO, to protect my family should that happen. Other parts of the country are only a major weather/geological event away from being in that same situation, at least temporarily.

Simply put ...we (my family) are much safer in our house because of the 2nd Amendment! It's pretty much a "no-brainer."

Yes. guns do not cause problems (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) cause problems, (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)s who run governments cause the most problems and those generally are the ones who wish to get rid of guns.

I'm wondering why there are people that believe guns only belong in the hands of government workers.

As with the gun being an equalizer between a 90lb women and a 300lb man, it is an equalizer between the people and governments. Ask the German Jews if they wish they had not had their guns confiscated. Ask people living in communist countries if they wish they had guns. Guns are what made America what it was and still partially is.

From my cold dead hands, period.

The question shouldn't be why Americans love guns so much. The question should be why the rest of the world doesn't.

because we have the right for self protection when you have to rely solely on government for your protection you are slaves to that government
an armed civilian population keeps the government humble and within their allotted powers

Cuz our folks that came before us were smart enough to write it down in a way that it couldn't be easily re-written. It matters and they knew it.

Americans like to pretend we're Classical Liberals. We say we value liberty and freedom and want a small government. For us it's absolute though, it's either freedom or tyranny. There are no positive rights, there's nothing the government can do to help its citizens. So when the government offers to promote a freedom at the expense of another one (like the right of security over the right to have a gun), we don't like it. It's the government trying to take away our freedom. That's the idea behind it really.

correct it is why liberals are gun grabbers they want an ever increasing powerful controlling central government and they know they are limited in that goal because they know there is an armed population that will eventually say enough is enough and we have the means to stop you

No they're not. Remember what I said about Positive rights? American Liberals, (while I think are more neo-liberal) are advocates of this idea that the government can promote "positive rights". Those are good things the government can produce, like making sure everyone has enough food. Having a government restrict freedom of speech is a bad thing because free speech is also a positive right. So having a powerful all controlling central government isn't what they want.

bull crap they want to pass law after law and more laws and regulations on top of that, and the more laws and regulations you have the more government you need to implement and enforce those laws and the more laws, regulations, and government you have the less freedoms and liberties you end up with

That's how positive rights work. Sacrifice some liberty, greater rights are made as a result. Think of it like this, a positive right the government should support is the right to security, everyone should be able to walk down the street without fear of being attacked. If that means to curtail certain rights like the right to have an assault rifle, then that's the way to go.

And yet the US is not free. The government spies on you, etc, etc, etc. Guess those guns worked really well.

Except that the only one who would attack a person with a gun is a government employee. You're actually taking away someone's security and replacing it with a promise of security.

So we shouldn't have at all because America has all this power?

I do agree though, i really do not feel free. But for many reasons, not jsut because of the crap America is doing to its citizens now.
