But why would you want to run unproductive coal mines? If you insist on giving people money for doing nothing usefull then wouldnt it be better to just give them cash and let them stay at home? Why insist on having people working a dangereous job and waste your own natural resources if it only costs you money?

Running a coal mine because of social justice is the most retarded form of welfare i can think of.

You didn't grasp what I said.

They did make the country money, they provided us with valuable exports.

If you were to check I think you will find that the mines were not nearly as unproductive and did not cost nearly as much as you think. The main reason they were closed was because we got a cheaper source of power for the power stations and domestic fuel in North Sea Gas

The purpose of the mines wasn't to make a profit, they were a nationalised industry, they didn't need to make a profit. They are there for the benefit of the people not to make rich fat cats richer.

    It's called Socialism.

The most amazing Post , perhaps ever .A Socialist unwittingly telling us what we all know , and seeing out and out stupidity as a virtue .
Note the use of "Fat Cats" . Haven't heard that piece of inferiority complex language for a long time .

" I'll tell thee this , young man . Those that make profit are scum bags . Right scum bags , by gum "
Those were the days . God help us .

I've got nothing against Capitalism, it's extremism I'm against. Saying the country should be entirely Socialist would be as stupid as saying it should be entirely Capitalist, it's horses for courses.

Unfortunately Capitalists seem to be extremists, it's the greed factor I expect but they don't seem to be happy unless they have absolutely everything.

But why coal mining? Theres a thousand things those people could have done that doesnt turn a profit, yet you choose the one that gives them cancer and wastes the natural resources of a small country.

As far as social security programs go, coal mining is the most retarded of them.

It doesn't waste anything, the coal was burnt, still is, it produces energy, heat to keep old people alive in winter whether directly or indirectly, only a Capitalist could say stopping old age pensioners dying of hypothermia is a waste of resources.

The coal belongs to everyone in Britain. What would be retarded was if some greedy politician gave it away to one of his capitalist pals in exchange for a nice lucrative seat on the board and the miners ended up getting cancer to pay for the shareholder's holidays.

Talking to you really makes this all alot easier to understand. Just imagine what we could do if european voters had brains!

The workers are doing something useful, I did tell you that and explained why, maybe you just weren't listening.

Why upset the trade balance by buying coal abroad when we have loads of coal of our own?

Do you think farmers, another hazardous job, should stop growing food and we can buy that from other countries as well?

You really aren't making any sense.

So what is wrong with what I regularly suggest ,
Conservative heads with Socialists hearts ?
Or , Conservatism of the twenty first century? The Brains of Gorgeous George and the heart of our nice Mister Cameron .
And please don't produce that patronising thought , that wealthy people lack feelings plus sympathy and empathy with those who are not wealthy . For it is the wealthy who are the only group who can materially help the unfortunate and disadvantaged in terms of doing / getting things --- Bill Gates , Warren Buffet and Steve Jobs are/were great examples . We need more of them .

I don't see Socialists saying the entire country should be run as a commune, every shop government owned, every business nationalised.

Yet the Capitalists seem to want private ownership of everything including the roads and the health service. They won't be happy till there are meters in ambulances.

Problems started when Capitalism stopped being a political system and became a religious faith.

That's a tiny bit too far. To be fair, even the most far-right people still want the army to be nationalised.

Plenty of money is being made now. Billions per quarter, I understand. But...people can't afford to pay energy bills, because profiteering puts energy prices straight through the roof. Utilities should be non profit. This private rip off is not good for the country or the environment. As long as they can abuse it for profit, there won't be progress on renewables if they can obstruct it.

If the plan was to sell utilities to the private sector because their infrastructure needed renewing and the country could not afford it, how has this stupidity helped the UK? Now, we don't own the utilities and people are being fleeced to f*ck and the profiteering companies? They are all sharing the same infrastructure, renting it from each other, not expanding it.

And when this penny drops and the people insist on utilities being repurchased, cost of purchasing from the profiteers will exceed any costs for rebuilding the infrastructure.

They should have bitten the bullet and paid the money at the time and the country's coffers could be taking a reasonable profit now... how much that would be helping the economy...

France's ongoing national crisis is likely to burnish Sarkozy's image as a capable leader and it would give him a poll boost. The first opinion poll since the national tragedy showed Sarkozy taking a two-point first-round lead over Hollande. But a socialist victory is still in the realm of possibility because the same poll also showed that Hollande was still ahead by eight percentage points in a second-round run-off on May 6.

I have just met a middle aged couple from Denmark who look wonderfully sane. The Danes are definitely the happiest people in the world. I envy their Prime Minister.

They do have a great sense of humour, but I hear their suicide rate is quite high. Or is that Norway...

I've had a terrific experience welcoming fans from all over the world during the 1998 World Cup here. The Scots were one of the funniest and most typical, but the Danes were literally lifting the place up.

Small people and countries have to be funny or they are ignored or bullied .
It is an explanation of an illness and weakness not a talent .

Yea I recall English and German hooligans did some damage during the World Cup in France.
The little feckers thought they were bad because they were born somewhere. Such idiocy!

No excuse for hooliganism or vandalism , regardless of which country they are from .
However , I like my little idea as regards behaviour --- that there is not much difference between small people and small countries .
So many comedians report that they became funny as a means of avoiding being bullied or ignored .
And with the exception of Switzerland , where they have water containing high contents of a Boredom chemical , the analogy to countries seems reasonable .
Which explains why Wales and Scotland have so many deep problems !!
They tried to become funny to avoid being stomped on , but tragically got the humour wrong and just became sad and uncultured . rofl .
