Why do we do some things?

I often wonder why we have certain norms and practices that make no sense. Sometimes there is a good explanation. Other times, not so much. It brings to mind an old joke.

A young woman and man were recently married. She was preparing a roast but cut the ends off before sticking it in the oven. Her new husband asked why she does this. I don't really know, she replied. That's now my mother taught me to do it. So he went to her mother and asked the same question. Why did you cut the ends of a roast off before putting it in the oven. Your daughter said that's how you taught her to do it. I don't really know she replied. That's how MY mother taught me to do it. So finally he went to the grandmother and asked the same question. Your daughter and granddaughter both cut the ends of a roast off before cooking it and they said that came from you. Why do you do this? After thinking for a moment the grandmother said "My roasting pan wasn't big enough for an entire roast. So I had to cut the ends off to make it fit!"

This struck me as I was cooking a hamburger. I was always taught to season both sides. Why? Why not just put twice as much seasoning on one side?

Why do we fold underwear and socks? I finally stopped doing that. My mother taught me to do it that way but I see no useful purpose. Keeping socks paired makes sense but you don't really have to fold them to do that. And I've never had a date complain that my underwear is wrinkled. :D

I've noticed that making the bed has gone out of fashion with many young women. Unless there is going to be a visitor and they are going into the bedroom, what is the use? Maybe straighten the covers and put the pillows in place. But I was taught to make a bed the old-fashioned way, including using hospital corners. One sb thought that was pretty funny and saw no use for it. She actually thought I was kind of anal about it. LOL! And she wasn't the only one to say something. It was hard to argue the point. I said because it helps to make the bed crisp when you crawl in. But does it really make a difference? Probably not.

When I moved from the city into the sticks, I quickly noticed that when old-timers are driving on a back road and make a right turn, they would move into the oncoming lane before they make the turn. Why? I wonder if it goes back to cars that didn't have power steering. Maybe it was easier to make a wide turn. Even though there is no reason to do that now, the habit has continued because that's how they've always done it.

I always wear my seatbelt and have a go at other people to wear their seatbelts! This is because I when I was 5 my mum was learning to drive I was in the back and did not have my seatbelt on when a lorry pulled out into the car. We went into the side of the trailer (Before sideguards) and I almost went through the windscreen.

When I was in my early 20's I went in a car with friends and made them all put the seatbelts on (They moaned like hell) and the driver flipped the car on it's side. I think they all wear their seatbelts now too.

If I had only one piece of advice to give in this world ALWAYS WEAR A SEATBELT

It is certainly an interesting question. Perhaps some behaviors are engaged in simply to instill some sense of order and routine in a chaotic world where few other things actually make sense.

I'm guilty of rarely ever making my bed, only time i make it is when I wash the sheets and covers, after that it stays the way it looks when I get out of bed in the morning. I live alone, and company that comes to visit doesn't go upstairs so I see no reason to make the bed. Living alone creates some pretty lazy habits. I do fold my clothes sometimes but I often just have the classic one basket for dirty clothes and one for clean clothes. I usually just grab clean dishes from the dishwasher instead of taking 5 mins to actually put the dishes away.

I wet the toothbrush before using it for some reason, no idea why.

But for OP, putting twice as much seasoning on one side of a burger rather than seasoning both sides doesn't taste the same. At least not to me. I figured that out while letting children help me prepare food for the grill one day lol.

Yes, last night I was talking to a friend who was a chef in years past and he said the same thing. He said your tongue either gets the bland or the over-seasoned side first and it makes a difference. I was thinking that by chewing it was a wash. But he says by then you have already have tasted it. He also said the best way is to mix the seasoning into the meat before you make the patty.

Another trick he taught me is to chill vegetables in ice water before you saute, boil, or fry them. That's why things like green beans in good restaurants are firm and crisp and not mushy.

I don't like using brushes for dishes. And I do all my dishes by hand. It's better than having to listen to that stupid dishwasher running. But sponges get contaminated pretty quickly. It makes one wonder why anyone would use them. So I started leaving a small bowl with bleach water sitting at the sink. A half a cap of bleach in the water is more than enough. Then I periodically submerge the sponges in the bleach water and make sure they are thoroughly saturated. Then wring them out [back into the bowl] and rinse them so that the smell of bleach is faint. Otherwise the bleach eats up the sponges. It works like a champ. The bleach water is good for about a week before the smell of bleach is getting weak.

So you don't get too much seasoning on one side. The seasoning tastes better if it's spread over the whole surface of the burger.

Well, the easiest way to pair socks is to kind of roll them together.

While I'm bad about not doing it, my wife usually makes the bed. it's more comfortable if you do. (not hospital corners, though).

Might be. My first two cars didn't have power steering, so I do that.

I have worn seatbelts for about 35 years now. Didn't wear them much until the day I was in two minor fender-benders in one day about a month before I turned 18. I realized at that point that I wasn't indestructible. Have worn them faithfully ever since.

This is WHY you did it in the first place? It does make sense. Driving esp something like an old truck w/o power steering was a real workout. And even cars were all big and heavy back then.

Seatbelts have been mandatory where I've lived for a long time. If I tried to drive even a short distance without it I felt vulnerable. Once you get used to wearing one, you notice when you don't. So I don't do that at all anymore. Most accidents happen close to home. I also had an old truck that didn't have a shoulder strap. I didn't like driving any distance with that because again, I felt vulnerable.

It's called habits. Once you get into a habit of something like that, you keep doing it. I had a Nissan pickup with manual steering. Not a real workout, but it was easier to do the wide turn.

I know it's a habit. The point was why you got in the habit in the first place.

When I said truck, I meant like a 55 Chevy. I didn't know they even made small trucks with manual steering. I thought it was gone by then. What year was the Nissan?

Wow, I just checked and see them through 97. I guess they're so light they didn't really need power steering.

1989. It had manual steering and transmission. At that time, all full sized pickup trucks had power steering, but only the higher end small trucks had it. Mine had only one option feature over the base model--whcih was Air Conditioning. At that time, A/C wasn't standard equipment, like it is now.
