How did Germany get so powerful? What are they doing right that we are doing wrong?

The Germans have always demonstrated themselves to be one of if not the most resilient people on the face of the earth. They're also smarter than most.

Well, we are still more powerful. However, they can stay strong in manufacturing because German unions care about the product they are producing. Instead of an adversarial relationiship, the union/management in German companies work together.

They're living high off the dole of US Taxpayers. It's called National Socialism. Unfortunately, their socialist utopia can't even be sustained when they're given foreign aid by the United States. It's still collapsing on itself

Germany gets almost no foreign aid from the U.S. Germany is only in danger of collapse, because they made the foolish decision to be part of the euro.

Germany is one of the greatest beneficiaries of the euro, their export surplus would be unsustainable if they still had the mark.

Germans have a strong work ethic in general, and they seem to be exceptionally good at organization.

There's also what ryan mentions above.

In general, the EU benefits Germany more than just about any other country, which is part of why they're so willing to bail out countries like Greece just to keep the Euro afloat.

Super power, not really. A regional power in Europe, most defiantly.

Do they work harder or have a higher expectation for quality than we do?

I mean on one hand there's Chinese crap. Then there's German engineering... we're somewhere in the middle... is that the answer?

Do Germans work harder than Americans?

German engineering seems to be largely a product of their technical education and strong emphasis on apprenticeships with industry partners

They are a superpower. They're one of the top economies and military in the world and they have nukes... they have a say in world events.

It's not that's the problem. They couldn't even carry out the mission in Libya without buying ammo from us.

In your mind having a prosper economy is less significant than being a war monger.

I don't see "buying ammo only when you need it" such a bad idea for a nation... don't see that as a weakness.

    Eh yeah....

Except that Germany's role in the NATO mission to Libya was two support ships and 100 men identifying potential targets from a base in Italy.

They sold ammo to the UK and the French.

    A: they don't have nukes.
    B: They don't have a top military.
    B. And their economy is still dwarfed by ours and China's.

So no, they're not a super power.

There have only ever been 3 superpowers Germany was never one. Germany does not have it's own nukes. From my understanding there are some american nukes on some joint bases within germany.

    It is a world power.

    Germany is a Superpower because:

    1. Hard Work
    2. Good Education, science, engineering
    3. Still not too left leaning political system

Germany is more conservative than some of its neighbors, but it's definitely left compared to us...

Um yeah- forgot to toe the line there for a minute. They have no nukes! You got it? Yeseree bob- no hidden arsenal on military bases in Germany- of course not!

They can take on any non-nuclear nation in the world.

Yeah but they were dust 70 years ago which goes back to the OP: how did they pull it off?

The Germans are stubborn as hell, that's how they pulled it off. They're not whiney entitlement seekers.
