That's true, the organized militia. But all law abiding males in America are members of the unorganized militia. Every male should own and be in possession of a military style firearm that can be used on a battlefield or he is in dereliction of duty and not a patriot. Since Colonial times America has been a "nation of citizens soldiers." When you read the Constitution you have to have the dictionary that was used at the time when our founding father wrote the Constitution. The definition and meaning of words change over time. "The right to keep and bare arms shall not be infringed." What was the American definition of "arms" back in 1787 ? From Websters Dictionary 1828 Before 1980 a M-16 did not meet the definition of being an assault rifle. It was just a service rifle or infantry rifle. Armalite's AR-15 was already on the shelves in sporting goods stores years before the U.S. military adopted the AR-15 and M-16.
