If by "defensive carbine" you mean "murderous machine of mass death and destruction", then yes.

Only if the stock is painted black.

I am curious if any one has used one as a quick handling bush gun for deer, and if so, what round do they use?

There was an early soft point round, worked well on deer, I do not remember if it was Norma.....

No worse than the .30-30 round that has taken many Deer.

Military ball ammo is not for Deer, soft point mushrooming ammo works well on Deer.

The cartridges here that are used aside from the 5.56/ 223 are the 6.8 SPC, 6.5 Grendel and the 7.62 Russian. Pig hunters commonly use the 6.8 and I'd say it would be the most common round for hunting.

I have uppers for the Grendel and the .458. I like Grenel’s at distance on paper and the .458 I have carried a couple times to and fro where I fish in the AK, but have not hunted game with any round with my AR. But, my question was in regard to the M1 carbine and if anyone has found a load for hunting deer with it in the bush; I like it’s quick handling, but wasn’t willing to trust the .30 cal standard mil round on deer and never tried building a suitable round because I didn’t own the gun... just one of those recurring thoughts.

I saw a guy years ago when I was a kid using soft points. I know they're still made, however the M1 carbine clones are usually poorly made and the old ones too valuable to use.

I had a friend that sometimes carried one deer hunting...loaded with HP, but in my hunts with him I never saw him harvest a deer with it. I tried hunting with a RedHawk with .44 mag hp, but could never convince myself to take a shot... all opportunities were 50+ yards and I never had the confidence in my ability or the round to kill cleanly at the ranges of those opportunities.

The only crappy M-1 carbine I saw were the Universals, pretty much the High-Point of M-1 carbines...
I bought one by mistake and was able to sell it quickly.

I've never seen a civilian built one that was worth the money. Too bad. I'd love to see high quality new manufacture M1 Garands and carbines.

At one point there were tons of parts available, receivers, and new barrels, stocks etc....
I built lots of them back then.
I told the truth on them being built from "parts guns" they looked great and worked well, all Mil Spec Surplus parts.

Back then we built M-1 Carbines and M-1 Garrands.
Later, AR hybrids built with Surplus M-16A1 parts.

I was lucky enough to own one of the Inland M1 carbines, made in 1943. It had been arsenal upgraded for the Korean War and had seen a lot of use, but it was still 100% reliable and very accurate. When Cor-Bon came out with their 110-gr. DPX hollowpoint that rifle became one of my favorite general purpose defensive carbines; astonishingly light and compact but capable of delivering a serious blow at any conventional defensive distance.

One of my biggest mistakes ever was when I was at the range with it and another shooter saw it and offered me what I thought was stupid money for it, cash on the barrel head, and I accepted. I always figured I'd have another one, but every one I've found since either was a ludicrously expensive collector's piece or a junker I wouldn't trust as a boat anchor.

Folks often talk about buyer’s remorse; with guns, I have suffered seller’s remorse more times than I like to count. Original iron frame Henry, original colt lightning...
