Why the Bulgarians rename the Old Slavic language to “Old Bulgarian”? The chronology is as follpws: Moravian king Rostislav decided to use the Slavic language in the churches of Moravia so he applied to the Byzantine emperor to send him some knowledgeable people to do the job. Kril and Metodius from Solun were chosen since they were highly educated and knew the Slav language because the Slavs were principal inhabitants of Solun and its vicinity. They translated the required clerical books into Slav language and went to Moravia. The Germans did not give up easily so Kiril and Methodius had to face the Roman Pope and to justify the use of the Slavic language which they did and the Pope approved. The new Moravian king returned the Germans so Kliment and Naum went back to Macedonia which was ruled by the Bulgarians. The Bulgarian tsar wanted to get rid of the Greek language in the churches so he welcomed Kliment and Naum and gave them an opportunity to continue with their job but this time for replacing the Greek language with Slav language. As it happened over history the Bulgarians started to name the Old Slavic to “Old Bulgarian” so when you are using dictionary of “Old Bulgarian” you are suppressed how similar the words are with the present Macedonian. At present the Russian is the most similar to the Old Slavic, so are the Bulgarians brave enough to tell the Russians that they are speaking Bulgarian? Can Bulgarians tell the Serbs that they are speaking Bulgarian only because they can find similar or the same words in the “Old Bulgarians” dictionary? Can we easily overlook the crucial fact that that language the Old Slavic was taken from the Macedonian Slavs? Is it not right that language to be called Old Macedonian?? That language was the spoken language of the Macedonian Slavs. Now who is the thief???

I am not the expert in this field of knowledge. But as far as I know Church Slavonic or Old Slavic is not analogue of old russian language. It leads its history from Old Bulgarian language. Though it was not alive language. But all first Christian books for Slavs were written in this language. So I believe Bulgarians have the full right to consider Church Slavonic as Old Bulgarian.

P.S. In the days of Kril and Metodius the difference between slavic languages was small, so Bulgarian dialect was clear for everybody.

All ethnoses have the mixed origin. At VII century the Turkic tribe Bulgarians was moved to the Balkans where they have mixed with the local slavic population. Having adopted slavic language (as Slavs made the majority of Bulgarian ancestors) and having given new ethnos a Turkic name. This quite normal phenomenon. Czechs mixed with Germans and Hungarians, Poles with Sarmatians, Russians with Scandinavian and Finnish tribes. Ethnogenesis is very complex process. Study a history of any ethnos and you will find similar processes.

If you're referring to Bulgar/Bolgar language, it was a language belonging to Oghur branch of Turkic languages.

So the Bulgarians were not Slavs and their language had Turkish origin. Therefore it is not right the Old Slavic taken from the Macedonian Slavs to be named "Old Bulgarian". I have to rise this question because the present Bulgarians use the similarity of the present Macedonian language with the Old Macedonian Slavic language named as "Old Bulgarian" to prove that the Macedonians do not and never existed.

"They speak East South Slavic dialects that can be linguistically classified as either Macedonian or Bulgarian,[26] but which are locally often referred to simply as "Slavic" or "'the local language". ." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavic_speakers_of_Greek_Macedonia so my guess you can call this language for old Macedonian as well .
according this "For that purpose, Cyril and his brother Methodius started to translate religious literature to Old Church Slavonic, allegedly based on Slavic dialects spoken in the hinterland of their home-town, Thessaloniki" the Slavic population of Greece speaks the closest to Old Slavic language

Maybe I'm late on this thread, but hope this may help...
Old Slavonic, renamed to 'Church Slavonic' has it's direct roots in proto-Slavic and you're correct when pointing out small differences in Slavic languages back then. Grammatically speaking the language which preserved grammar forms of so called 'Church Slavonic' is Slovenian who still has a distinctive differences between supin and infinitive, unlike most Slavic languages.

So I guess the "Old Bulgarian" (Old Slavonic?) language was the first Slavic language adopted by Bulgarians in favour of Bulgar language?

Maybe because Bulgarians were never Slavs. Hundreds years ago Proto-Bulgarians mixed with a small portion of Slavic tribes, but it was not a massive "operation". Bulgarians lack the Slavic R1a gene. Bulgarians are not Slavs, and the Cyrillic alphabet was not created by Slavs, but by two Bulgarian-Greek brothers. You can prove my words in every study available online and offline. Same goes for old Bulgarian languages.

Genetically Bulgarians' blood brothers are the Northern Greeks around Thessaloniki, a large portion of Croats (Croatia), Macedons, Romanians (Dachians) and South Italians from around Sardinia and Sicily.
