I was in the local supermarket and the loo roll shelves were practically empty. But the shelves with the important stuff such as brandy and rum and whisky and **** were jammed packed.

Has the Chinese flu robbed us of our sense of priority?

Just to see it I went to our local Wal Mart Super Store.
No toilet paper, no paper towels, no baby wipes, no Clorox or any household cleaners, same in the handwash section, nothing not even a bar of soap, first aid section all rubbing alcohol and related products gone.
Than I did my run of the mill groceries shopping, totally nuts. People are buying to or 3 cart loads of groceries hundreds of dollar of rather cheep food, the real crap. The shelves with water bottles, empty. Don't they have a faucet ?
The grocery section with fresh foods and meats are full.
    Insanity has taken over

I don't get the toilet paper thing, but the non-fresh grocery thing makes sense. If it gets much worse the best thing to do will be to minimize time in public, i.e. not go grocery shopping. And also if you do get sick you're supposed to stay at home for about 14 days to avoid hurting other people in public. The reasonable level of personal concern is going to depend on age. Older people, and those with lung disease, don't fare nearly as well as the young for this one.

Panic buying of cat baskets has led to one poor kitten having to rough it in the fruit bowl.......

If you're going to be cooped up for days, weeks at a time, you need toilet paper because pooping is still a thing. Stores don't actually carry that much when you think about it. So of course the shelves are going to be empty of it. Add in families that live together will now be pooping together at higher rates than normal, and you get an increased need for toilet paper.

The average American uses 100 rolls of toilet paper in a year.
The amounts people are buying is insane.
It's a psychological thing, it is relatively cheap, simple to store and reassures people that they are doing something.
Mostly it is a self-fulfilling prophecy, the news is telling everyone that supermarkets are experiencing panic buying and empty shelves worry folks into buying more of everything than they need.
If you are unfortunate enough to need to self-isolate for a couple of weeks you don't need two month's worth of supplies.
It's just selfish really, and self-defeating. If you clear the last 10 bottles of hand sanitiser off the shelf then the next 9 people can't sterilise their hands which puts the community at increased risk. Guess what mr selfish, the community includes you so you have just made yourself more likely to pick up the virus.

.....questions have been asked in the house about the galloping insanity of those stockpiling cat baskets but, as usual, they fall on deaf ears.....

Confession time; My two cats (cat and kitten) are being cat sat at my parents house while this old house I'm in is being rewired and having central heating installed; also new doors and a house clearing meaning kitties aren't here this week among all the floor boards being up; before they went; my cats were running under the house; I decided enough construction site was enough and got them out before all the doors went and all the heavy radiators arrived.
I miss them; but they're happy enough settled in now at my parents house.

I'm left with my bed, TVs, guitars, 2 desks and a table and some chairs; I need a new couch and kitchen table and quite frankly; more furniture than I care to think of right now; but kitties are away.
I know I'm doing right by them though getting them out of the house until it's safe for them to return. Could be another two weeks though; hopefully not.

One pack of 12 toilet rolls last me a year; however, since I'm now sharing my TP with the builders; it's lasting me 2 weeks.

Someone said a symptom was diarrhea; hence all the TP going...

I bet some TP company started that rumor.

They did go insane over the weekend and cleaned out the grocery stores in the county.
Every thing. It looks like Venezuela.
How are they going to keep all the fresh food, meats and produce, fresh ? Do they have 4 or 5 fridges and freezers ?
The fresh produce in the stores was harvested several weeks ago and has a live span, if bought, of maybe 2 weeks, even if it is in a fridge.
What are they going to do with that stuff ?
How did they pay for it ? Hundreds of Dollar, in the middle of the month.
Come first of the month when the bills come in, rent, car payments, mortgage, utilities and so on. What are they going to do ?
    They blew their money.

I've got a sister in NJ who called on the weekend to say she couldn't find TP in any stores for 20 miles, and... a brother in PA who's stock piled and is fine apparently for supplies.
Personally I'm fine (for now) but I resupplied before TP stocks were scarce.
I still see the odd roll in Thornton Heath, but the majority are out and my Tesco was on the news.

If you can get through the next week or so there will be a massive glut as demand falls dramatically.
The idiots who have bought whole shopping carts full of the stuff won't be buying any TP for months.
I predict huge discounts in the near future and a lot of smug people like me taking advantage.

I think many folks probably fear poop more than they fear coronavirus, and they would rather risk hunger or infection than contemplate wiping with anything they can't flush away.

Then again, it might just be that alcohol distributors havn't faked any videos of ppl loading up booze so as to create a run on it.

It just occurred to me; my brother in PA married into a devout Mormon family; so, I'm even less surprised to find he's stockpiling and has supplies.
