Why was homosexuality de-listed as a paraphilia by psychology/psychiatry?

Either definition would be accurate. Whether it be a homosexual man or anyone with strong same sex attraction.

I'm not really clear on what your point is here.

My first thought was to play along and say "ok, I was wrong, it's not neat it's sloppy as all hell & you have to agree w/ me". But that'd be missing what's really happening here, that we got interchange & this is good. imho it's of course unfortunate that you seem so upset but heck, maybe this is how you manage ur problems.

    whatever.

--except to have an intelligible convo we need to understand which definition we're using. My thinking was to say that a "homosexual" was someone who's confirmed same sex, but everyone I talk to here's all over the place w/ all kinds of definitions. Our meaningful discussion descends into chaos.

Well , i think you said it yourself it's politics. "Gay Conversion Therapy" was banned in Victoria, Australia recently by politicians, not by the psychologist guild itself.

So we have this system in the world where experts don't make the decisions. They inform the government and then the decisions are made by a lay person who is an elected official who may or may not be an expert in the area that they are making decisions about. But hopefully it's good advice and in a robust democracy both sides would usually agree.

I don't think you're interested in communicating so we'll just leave it there.

That seems to be your debate strategy so far; make irrelevant statements and then dismiss others through various insults while claiming inference.

Maybe it isn’t everyone else that is “upset”…

Homosexuality was delisted because it does not and never once confirmed to the medical definition of a mental illness. Instead of asking why it was delisted — which has been answered numerous times — you should be inquiring why it was listed in the first place

Yes it is no more a paraphilia than heterosexuality is. The DSM which is where this was listed was a manual on treating people with psychiatric conditions.

Psychiatric medicine is notoriously vague and very difficult to quantify you can be diagnosed with schizophrenia and there's no way to really test for it so it's just based on a psychiatrist opinion.

Further a paraphilia would be a mental illness characterized as sexual fixation on an object or a characteristic. Or in layman's terms a sexual fetish which is not considered a mental disorder unless the fetish is criminal. Or unless it interferes with normal life. You can't say that reproduction within your couple only is something you have to do in order for your life to be considered normal from the psychiatric standpoint because there's plenty of people that don't have children and that's not a mental illness, there are people that take a vow of celibacy and that's not a mental illness, there are people that become surgically sterilized and that's not a mental illness, and there are people that engage in sexual behavior of the heterosexual variety that use contraception and that's not a mental illness.

Even among couples who reproduce they only do it three or four times in their lifetime but they engage in sexual behavior far more frequently.

The only thing left that you could possibly call a mental illness is the attraction to the same sex in which case fair enough produce evidence that that interferes with normal life from a psychological standpoint. The apa couldn't produce this so they had to remove homosexuality from the DSM it was not an appropriate diagnostic detail in a person's life.

The fact that it took a political movement for them to adjust their diagnostic criteria indicates it's not based on science and it never was.

Psychiatry is sometimes characterized as a way to enforce social norms in fact some communist countries often put dissidents in psychiatric hospitals.

In the US and the late 19th century there was a psychiatric illness called drapedomania which would be the mental illness slave would have wanting to escape his captors.

So social pressure and has to be the thing used to stop this authoritarianism.

Basically any Behavior you want to engineer you simply label as a psychiatric disorder. Which is why we saw in the 1800s women who desired sex labeled as mentally ill.

So I wouldn't put too much stock the psychoanalytics of psychiatry from the 1950s and before. Homosexuality being in the DSM in its first publication in 1952 was an artifact of psychiatry being used as a means to control social behavior.
