Should we really lower the voting age to 16? Are 16-year-olds mature enough for to make informed decisions? Or is this just anguish over Parkland?

    Absolutely not.

One would think that rational decisions about representation and matters important to the Nation would require some level of experience and wisdom.

A 16 year old lacks both.

Lol, we should ask auto insurance companies why they charge 3-5 times as much for teenage drivers if these teenagers can make informed decisions.

And we should ask the teenagers themselves, why the age to buy guns should be increased from 18 to 21 when they can make informed decisions at 16.

Absolutely ridiculous idea. Democracy works best with a well informed electorate. 16 year olds have not had time to figure out politics, and at that age they have other things on their minds. This suggestion always comes from the left because young people are always liberal until they learn better. Voting age should be raised to 21.

maybe just allow voting for people with adequate intelligence regardless of age. Or perhaps only allow voting rights to people who pay a certain amount of income tax or have a certain net worth.

Just kidding of course. Making fun of the concept that somehow as people get older they become more informed. Remember the anti Vietnam war movement started in the collages and it took years for the old people to get as smart as the college kids.

When i was 16 and 18, voting age started at 21. I frankly did not complain I could not vote.

What do we actually vote for?

    1. Local issues at times we are allowed to vote on. Our local city council far and away voted as they want on issues before them. We have only the vote as to who is on the city council. I have along with many others gone to the city council trying to persuade them not to change zoning. The contractors prevailed and we got told to move out that new buildings were going to be built there.

    2. County issues. Few county issues show up on the ballot here in CA. And when they do show up, a ton of money is spent by both sides trying to get their ways.

    3. State issues. Same as 1 and 2. Seldom does a ballot measure get to us yet the congress of CA is daily creating laws, rules and regulations they simply keep from us.

    4. national Each 4 years the same old thing takes place. We vote for electors but Democrats claim we vote for presidents. And if they lose, they fight like mad denying the actual system is state by state where elections do assemble and do vote for the president.

I have only Democrats representing me so each letter I send to them comes back with they do not agree and of course be nice and vote for them next time.

The communist propaganda machine got to the kids right away. It took a lot longer for the grown-ups to get sucked in. Most of them didn't.

I think they should start with voting for how and what they should be taught at meetings with the school board.

    They eat detergent.

Detergent packaging has literally had to be redesigned so they won't think it's food.

I don't want that having a say in anything that might affect me. sorry.

If my post scared you, I hope you realize that's the smallest thing they'd vote on. Everything else is a bigger issue, pretty much.

Raise it to 25 when the brain centers for judgement are fully developed.

Anyone who has seen the mentality of millennials knows that politics is not cold and logical to them. In fact, that is where they are least reasonable. It's ALL about their feels.

    https://www.libertynation.com/shock-left-lobbies-younger-voters/

    so...

an ideological cohort that looks to turn government into everybody's generous and nurturing mommy
would see a political goldmine in adding eight-ish million voters who actually rely on their actual mommies? say it ain't so, Joe.

so transparent. so utterly, laughably transparent. would be like their amnesty plans.....millions of legitimate new voters overnight.

Why settle for 16? Why not 10 or even 6? Or why not do the opposite and increase it to 125 years?

Would be absolutely hilarious to see how the corrupted and idiotic system of democracy would crumble down to the level of politicians promising free chocolate and soda for all once the voting age was lowered to 4 years old. :D

How is a 25 year old different from someone who is 24 years old, 11 months and 29 days?

I see what you did there. Lol. :)

Anyays. I would much rather prefer a system where one presidential term is increased to 95 years to foster leaders with lower time preferences and thus building a more stable and longlasting society. This would also mean that no longer would politicians only look to maximise votes, but actually to think and to take responsibility. This would also disincentivise careerists from entering politics and most likely would the party system of today collapse and instead be replaced by individuals with broader ideological differences. Finally, this would probably also mean the end of populism, demagogoue-ism and vote-fishing.

You would have to know ALL 16 year olds to accurately make that statement.

Since I doubt you know even 1/100th of 1% of all 16 year old's...your statement is practically baseless and should be treated accordingly.

The voting age should be 25, and voting should be done on your annual tax return every year, and the votes tallied over time to determine who is elected.

Hmmm. So lets think about your post logically.

You take exception to my observation by saying I would have to know ALL 16 year olds in order to know they lack the wisdom and experience to make informed voting decisions.

I take it that means that you believe they do have the wisdom and experience to make informed voting decisions.

Following your standard, wouldn't you need to know ALL 16 year olds to make to claim?

Do you know ALL 16 year olds?

Of course you don't, which makes your statement practically baseless and should be treated accordingly.

What is irrefutable, is that 16 year olds, in general, have only the beginnings of awareness outside their local environment and have practically no life experience. It's not a put down, it's a matter of years on earth. It's impossible to teach life experience and wisdom, those are the dividends only time will pay.

BTW, are you upset with my accurate observation because you are yourself, 16 years old?
