Will Pence run in 2024 knowing that Trump, who he supported, couldn't win or will the GOP return to the old Republican party, fragmented as it might be.
Who would be your first choice for GOP nominee.

I believe that Pence would only be floated only if Trump made a Final Decision Not to Run.

Then, of course, the game becomes will Trump endorse and who will he endorse.

Obviously, the Hottest Name (should Trump pass) is Nikki Haley.

That said, until I hear different:
My default position is that Trump is Running in 2024.

So you think they will run a loser?
    Why would they do that?

Pence will probably run, but I'm unclear what, if any, excitement he generates. Will he be running in the Trumpian lane or the evangelical lane?

I do not think so, as he could not win, but if he wants too, let him run :)

the only way Pence becomes President is if Trump resigns, so he can be Pardoned

Indiana's not a swing state, and Pence is too fundamentally Christian to win any of the States that Trump lost(save for Arizona.). I don't have any bone to pick against Christianity, or those who believe. I'm just looking at the political map. Someone too religiously extreme is easy picking for the Democratic machine. Pence would get blown out in a Presidential race.

The Republicans need to find themselves a middle ground, someone who can appeal to the nation(nationalists) while appealing to the old guard. I actually think that Ted Cruz has positioned himself well in the Senate, and that the 'anti-Trump' factor will wane substantially if a Biden Administration flops.

Ted Cruz was born in Canada. He can't be President.

The only way that Pence would have a prayer in the Primary would be with Trump's Endorsement.

Without it, you are probably looking at someone like Haley or Cruz.

Romney, who (at age 77) would be younger than Biden is now, would be an interesting alternative should the GOP want to rid itself of Trumpism.

Kasich would also fit that bill.

The Trumpism factor will exist as a substantial portion of the GOP vote.(or rather, as a Trump-centric portion of the vote.). It would make it so that any nominee who doesn't get even a fraction of that portion of votes, unlikely to win the nomination.

Trump literally has the power, even as a loser to say "the future of the GOP goes where I want it to go." Something that not even Obama was able to do for democrats.

I believe it is becoming more and more likely that Trump decides to run again in 2024. But, even if he doesn't, Trump will still want to be the king maker in the GOP. If the latter is the case, maybe Pence will have a chance.

Maybe Trump lost his stranglehold of the country. However, he didn't lose his stranglehold of the GOP. They may suffer with him for another four years. They made their bed, now they have to lay in it.

I totally agree with your assessment.

In essence, Trump is holding every Elected Republican in the Country, at both Federal.and State Levels, hostage until (at least) the 2022 Midterms.

Ted Cruz is far too unctuous to appeal on the national level IMO.

Why can't the Republicans field a candidate in the mold of John Kasich or Jon Huntsman? You know, someone likable and competent who can appeal across the aisle?

I could vote for someone like that but I could never vote for a RW nutjob.

The Ted Cruzs and Jim Jordans of this world are just too strident to attract centrist and moderate Democratic voters and I think the Repubs are going to need that kind of appeal especially if Trump loyalists split the party going forward.

Same reason why the Democrat in 2016 tried to run that democrat who said "all lives matter" and then he got ran off the stage. There's no cross appeal on the other side either.

I'm not so sure. Think of all the Obama voters who went for Trump (and then back to Biden or so it would seem).

Trump is not holding them hostage. It’s the choice all those “representatives” have made and gives us all insight into their actual priorities.

    They’ve neutered themselves. Sick. Pathetic.

I was about to give out a huge LOL at the title, until I remembered that Republicans elected Trump. Anything they do from here on out is an improvement. Though, in the case of Pence, not too much of an improvement.

I think the GOP nominee will be somebody who stayed away from the Trump debacle, Somebody who might not stand out right now, but will probably be making headlines in the next couple of years. I don't know who. Some mayor, or some Congressman who somehow has managed to stay below the radar for now.

If they're smart, that is. But... heck!... this is the Republican Party! I mean... it's not like it's the GOP anymore. They could very well nominate Trump again... Even if he's in prison.

I completely agree. I don't know if I'd vote for them, but if Biden lets us down in a resounding way, I might very well take a hard look at a candidate like that.

Watching the repubs try to grow a set and squirm out of trump's stranglehold will be the fun event of the upcoming season.
Unless they kick the trump cult to the curb, they will keep losing.

    Trump:

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/01/politics/donald-trump-christmas-party-second-term/index.html

"It's been an amazing four years," Trump told the room, filled with many people not wearing masks despite public health officials' guidance amid the Covid-19 pandemic. "We are trying to do another four years. Otherwise, I'll see you in four years."

Well, looks like Trump is inching closer to declaring a run in 2024. Say goodbye to Pence's prospects.

I doubt Pence or Trump will run in 2024. The GOP needs some ethnic candidates (apparently color is more important to voters than smart policies)...The GOP needs to start playing the race game just like the left does. Pence or Trump in 2024 would be a disaster IMO
